Job description

Are you a qualified fitter and machinist looking for a tree change? West Coast Wilderness Railway (WCWR) is a heritage rail experience that takes its passengers deep into the rainforests of Western Tasmania. Our motto, with us for almost 125 years, is find a way or make it – and we certainly do!

You’ll be a qualified fitter and machinist holding a minimum of Cert IV in Mechanical Engineering with the passion to keep learning and innovating. You don’t mind getting your hands dirty and enjoy supervising your own team while collaborating with others, and get a buzz from providing excellent visitor experiences. You can demonstrate your experience in rolling stock maintenance, record keeping, developing and implementing work programs and in the supervision of staff. You like to develop innovative engineering solutions to meet the daily challenges of running a heritage tourist railway hauled by original steam and diesel locomotives.  You will have a high level of problem-solving skills.  Be able to interpret engineering drawings and reports and be able to develop and implement work plans and programs. You will have or be able to obtain a Category 2 Rail medical.

Our ideal candidate will be based in (or relocate to) the West Coast of Tasmania and will work from our workshop in Queenstown. West Coast Tasmania is a region of rugged, World Heritage-listed wilderness and offers a myriad of activities and services including trains, fishing, trains, hiking, trains, mountain biking and, you guessed it, trains!. Queenstown, the largest town in the region, has schools, pharmacy, restaurants, cafes and a buzzing arts scene.

WCWR is an equal opportunity employer that promotes fair access to all employment opportunities and promotions. Discrimination and workplace-based harassment is not tolerated. WCWR is committed to high standards of Work Health and Safety among its workforce and expects all employees to ensure minimum standards of practice are maintained. As per Rail Safety National Law, WCWR has zero tolerance to drugs and alcohol in the workplace and conducts random drug and alcohol tests. Staff are required to undergo a National Police Check.
