OVERALL, PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
Workshop Assistant works within the Training Department and supports staff and students through the care and maintenance of hand tools and machines within the workshops. In addition, they will provide support on the safe and correct use of machinery and hand tools.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Liaise with the Training Manager/Authorised Representative to coordinate the consumables, tools and equipment required to provide appropriate learning and assessment environments
- Monitor and be involved in assisting teaching staff with the supervision of students who are engaged in using machinery and equipment as per the assessment task
- Maintain hand tools, machine tools and equipment within each workshop for all types of work carried out in the workshop
- Ensure that chisels and cutting blades are sharp
- Replace band saw and table saw blades when required
- Assist with the setup of workshop prior to the practicals as per the units as and when required
- Provide organised and safe provision of hand tools, power tools, machinery, and equipment
- Induct/instruct new staff and students through the correct use of consumables, tools, and equipment
- Ensure that storage areas are kept organised through planning and liaising with the respective Training staff
- Provide WHS support to the students and the Training Staff while working in the workshop
- Ensure the availability of the equipment and consumables as per the equipment list/s for each unit/group of unit’s suitability checklist 3 weeks prior to the commencement of a unit/group of units.
- Coordinates tools/consumable ordering process as and when required.
- Ensure the consumables are used efficiently.
- Ability to use hand-held air and power tools
- Preventive Service and scheduled maintenance of equipment
- Ensuring the workshop is clean and tidy before and after each practical session.
- Ensuring the SOP (Standard Operating Procedures) have been followed.
- Maintaining incident reports of all kinds including theft, breakage and impairment of consumables, Equipment, and tools
- Performing scheduled stock takes in order to maintain healthy inventory levels and minimize the losses in retail and wholesale businesses.
- Must adhere to Orange College Anti-Bribery Policy.
- Must read, understand and adhere to the information provided in Orange College’s Workshop Manual.
- Must adhere to Orange College staff dress policy.
Occupational Safety and Health (OS&H) Responsibilities:
- Comply with all Statutory requirements.
- Take reasonable care to ensure their own safety and health whilst at work and that of others.
- Consult and cooperate with Management on matters of Occupational Safety and Health.
- Report all hazards, accidents, incidents and near misses according to the Accident/Critical Incident Reporting process.
- Develop and follow all safe work procedures as directed by the supervisor or as otherwise directed.
- Must have and wear appropriate PPE gear at all times while in workshop area.

- Suitable work pants (denim and tracksuit pants are not permitted)
- Hi-Vis long sleeve shirt provided by the College with branding logo (must meet AS/NZS 4602.1:2011 High-Visibility Safety Garments for Day use only and rated UPF 50+. AS/NZS 4399: 1999 Sun Protective Clothing – Evaluation and Classification)
- Hearing Protection (AS1270, earmuffs/ear plugs)
- Sun protection equipment
- Work gloves (must comply with standard EN 388:3131 and meet Risk Category II: Gloves of Intermediate Design for Intermediate Risk, cleaning gloves are not permitted)
- Safety/hard Helmet
- Hair Restraint (long hair needs to be restrained)
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
- The Workshop Assistant reports directly to the Training Manager and provides support and advice to teaching staff within the Training Department.
- Liaison with other departments within the college (Maintenance), external agencies and providers is required.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- Suitable qualifications and/or experience in a similar role
- Current first aid certificate
- Working with Children Check
- White Card and/or essential requirements to be met as per the state/statutory requirements
- Experience of understanding quotes and accessing the needed material/equipment for the workshop is essential. Someone who is self-motivated and can carry out instructions.
- Experience with timber framing with machining and classroom management would be advantageous
- Forklift licence is desirable not essentials
