Youturn is a not-for-profit organisation that provides health and social services to over 6,000 young people and their families annually, to assist them in achieving their full potential.
Our programs and services are available to people on the Sunshine Coast, Darling Downs, Moreton Bay and Wide Bay regions, as well as other communities around Australia. These services have the prime objective of delivering the organisation's mission to, support young people in their time of need to live a healthy and meaningful life.
Youturn has four main focus areas: Child Safety, Homelessness, Mental Health and Suicide Prevention.

The Opportunity
As a Youth Support Worker you will work to improve the stability, confidence and competence of young people accessing the support service and ensure their wellbeing and safety.
You will work as a member of the Youturn team and will be responsible for providing young people with age appropriate knowledge, skills and supports, through the use of educative, preventative, and early intervention strategies.
Whilst working in the Youth Support Program you will use your knowledge, skills and resources to;
- Improve the wellbeing and safety of young people based on their level of need and circumstances.
- Increase education and employment outcomes.
- Connect young people to access relevant mainstream and specialist services e.g. drug and alcohol, mental health and homelessness service.
Some of your other key responsibilities will include:
- Receive and process referrals regarding young people in need of case management support.
- Support the development and implementation of individual case plans.
- Assist young people in becoming independent through recognising their own capabilities.
- Learn, understand and implement a variety of strategies to engage hard-to-reach families, including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders and families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
- Effectively build rapport with children, young people and their families.
- Provide court support to young people.
- Support young people to engage in programs that deliver innovative strategies for dealing with individual circumstances.
Selection Criteria
- Qualifications, or working towards, in social sciences, social work, community services, youth work and/or equivalent level of experience in working with young people at risk.
- Knowledge of issues facing young people who are facing severe barriers to achieving stability and security in their personal lives.
- The ability to develop rapport and communication with young people, families, relief staff, staff, management and colleagues from community agencies, including people from diverse cultural backgrounds, government and non-government organisations.
- Ability to negotiate and advocate on the client’s behalf.
- Ability to respond appropriately and in a timely manner to crisis situations.
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a professional team.
- Well-developed verbal and written communication skills.
Other Requirements
- Ability to operate Windows applications at a high level, including the following Microsoft applications: Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel and the program’s relevant client information recording system. Or, the ability to rapidly acquire these skills within one month of commencement
- Must hold a current ‘C’ class open drivers licence.
- Must hold a Blue Card issued by the Queensland Department of Justice and Attorney-General.
- Must hold, or be eligible to apply for, a Suitability Check issued by the Queensland Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services.
- Youturn requires all its workplace participants to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with an approved COVID-19 vaccine, according to up-to-date health advice from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) or a State or Federal Government; or provide a valid exemption certificate.
