We are seeking a dedicated Youth worker who has a passion to make positive impact in the lives of young people. Reporting to the Principal, the Youth Worker at Darling Heights State School will support the Student Engagement Program. As the Youth worker you will liaise between students, school personnel, and the home parents/guardians of any students who encounter educational, social, emotional or behaviour problems.

Opened in 1980, Darling Heights State School is located in the south-western precinct of Toowoomba, within a block's walk of the campus of the University of Southern Queensland. Darling Heights State School offers programs covering the National Curriculum, in all classes each offering core literacy and numeracy blocks and programs to encourage higher achieving students, extension literacy groups, enrichment programs, extension modules and extra-curricular offerings. The structure of the school features three broad sub-schools: junior, intermediate and senior schools.
Your Role:
In this role, you will:
- Use school attendance and other data to monitor students well-being and engagement and intervene early by providing counselling and support to address reasons for well-being concerns and disengagement.
- Work with students and their families to determine and implement strategies suited to their context and help students to have a more positive educational experience.
- Enhance student social skills, assertiveness, self-esteem and problem solving skills through a strength based approach to providing support.
- Develop targeted strategies with students to address school avoidance or difficulties in navigating social and learning situations.
- Work collaboratively with cohorts of students that may be facing similar challenges to build peer relationships and establish social networks for support.
