It's a crazy landscape right now with so many positions available, it's hard to know what's right for you! Are the salaries the same? Do they invest in me as an Occupational Therapist? Do they have massive KPI's to meet? What's staff turn over like, is this an indication of burnout for their team?
It's a minefield. So I'm here to help! As the director of D.O.T.S. I value transparency, direct and clear communication and above all I value OT's and their needs.
I've been in business for 10 years now and I've learnt a lot in this time. I started with subcontracts, we use to pay 65% to our team. Now that sounds pretty incredible if you ask me but I can tell you it wasn't and it was nothing like what we offer now. 65% meant sure a great sounding wage in your pocket but it didn't include holiday pay, superannuation, it was inclusive of tax, no PD money, no resources, you get the drift. It also meant a lot of therapists burning out!
The costs of working were being taken from this 65% and pretty soon you're not taking home as much as it sounds like. Above all however, there was no team culture. Why you might ask? Well you feel as though you are only earning money when you are seeing clients, because, well you are. No clients, no $$. Therapists in these settings spend their time seeing clients non stop with little flexibility for groups, working with educators or the team around the child let alone colleagues. How do I know? Because I use to be one of these business owners and it was no fun for me either.
With an employed wage, ongoing contracts you are paid no matter what. This means you have time to spend on your own development and I have the freedom to use some of your time to invest in taking you away on retreats for example or book in regular supervision that your time is paid for and run in house professional development for an hour a fortnight. Not to mention the ability to celebrate events such as Christmas together and closing the clinic for fun team days. None of this was possible when I had subcontractor. Packages can sound great but it's so important to understand what is included in them.
My passion although it is strongly my team is also the wider OT community as it breaks my heart hearing story after story of OT burn out or leaving the profession because OT was not what they expected and often I question if really it wasn't OT but the environments in which they worked.
I hope this has helped educate you a little about all the different things to consider when looking at all the positions available and that I have added some value to your OT journey whether you join our team or not as this is my true passion.
