Job description

Advertised Vacancy Number: IPS/SS880866

This is a permanent part-time (0.8FTE) position commencing Term 2, 2024

Dianella Primary College (PC) and Dianella Secondary College Education Support Centre (ESC) are seeking an enthusiastic, dedicated and experienced Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer (AIEO). Dianella PC and Dianella Secondary College ESC are situated on a shared precinct and this position is shared across the two school sites, with two (2) days per week (0.4) at each school.

We are seeking an innovative AIEO, who will use their skills and knowledge of Aboriginal history, language and culture to support the development of increased cultural awareness and knowledge across the school. As an AIEO, you should be reliable and flexible, whilst providing support and effective assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, their parents/guardians, teachers, the school, and the community through the knowledge, understanding, and sharing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, language and culture. Applicants who can incorporate aspects of the arts into the role will be highly regarded.

The successful applicant will assist teachers in delivering planned education programs and encouraging a supportive and inclusive learning environment. They will assist students to access the educational program and have an increased understanding of the multicultural nature of the learning environment. The AIEO should act as liaison between the community and school to develop an educational program relevant to both educational and cultural needs, and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, particularly those at risk, through mentoring and pastoral care to encourage participation and achievement at school.

Dianella PC has a diverse school population, with approximately 80% of our school population coming from an English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EALD) background. We have an onsite Intensive English Centre (IEC) and as a school we utilise the EALD progress maps to guide planning in our IEC program and to support EALD students in our mainstream classes. Dianella SC ESC is a diverse multicultural secondary school that caters for students with disabilities from Year 7 to Year 13.

Both schools provide a supportive and exciting workplace. Staff are committed, hard-working and willing to go above and beyond for each other and for the students. We all share ownership, accountability, and responsibility to the school community for the progress of our students and work hard to build and maintain a positive work environment with a great internal culture.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work-related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively interact with students, teachers, parents, community members and professional staff on the provision and development of educational programs.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact on a range of levels in a variety of settings and with different audiences, including community members, teaching and other professionals.
  • Ability to contribute to a school-level team and to provide multi-cultural direction in the development of the educational program, development of language resources, and evaluation of education and behaviour management programs.
  • Ability to effectively assist teachers in implementing educational and behaviour management programs.
  • Good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of effective education programs to students.
  • Ability to assist with the general health and well-being of students.

Applications will be assessed against these work-related requirements (selection criteria) of the position. The business needs of the school may also be considered. It is therefore recommended that you consider all information contained in the advertisement and any other related information before applying for the vacancy.
