The Opportunity
Do you have strong community connections, a passion to connect with people and an interest in Aboriginal Health? Join our Childhood Cancer Research Program who are seeking an experienced Aboriginal Community Engagement Coordinator to support the program with Community Engagement and project management activities.
Our Brain Tumour Research Program has commenced a project to investigate cancer in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, to help us better understand their journey and identify ways to improve treatment and reduce side effects.
Reporting to the Project Lead, you will be responsible for undertaking a detailed Community Engagement process with the aim to establish an Aboriginal community reference group who can guide and provide a community perspective on different aspects of this research program.
This will involve activities such as:
- Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with local and national Aboriginal health services, Aboriginal Elders, community members, and service providers to maximise knowledge of and support for the work in the wider community.
- Organising community forums, focus groups and events.
- Ensuring that the team's research activities align with cultural values, protocols, and practices of Aboriginal health research.
- Contributing to the development of resources, research project newsletters, information letters and posters.
About You
This position would suit someone who has experience working and engaging with community members, stakeholders or researchers to build and sustain relationships, coupled with a strong understanding of Aboriginal health and wellbeing. Along with that, the key to your success will be your demonstrated skills and experience in the following:
- Strong interest in Aboriginal Health and Child Health Research
- Demonstrated experience in building relationships and working collaboratively with key stakeholders at various levels
- Demonstrated ability to set goals, manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
- Well-developed written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a larger research team.
