Introducing CHES: The Centre for Higher Education Studies

This family-leave replacement position is an opportunity to join the team at the Centre for Higher Education Studies (CHES) as a 0.6 FTE part-time member of staff. Hours of attendance will be negotiated.

Please contact the principal, Stewart Milner, for more information about CHES at **************@education.vic.gov.au .

There are currently 13 members of staff at CHES including the Principal, Assistant Principal, Business Manager, IT Manager, Science Laboratory Technician, IT & AV Technician, and several teaching staff.

Our website: https://ches.vic.edu.au/

CHES has been established as a centre of excellence in programs for high-achieving and high-ability senior secondary students across Victoria. We are a new co-educational, purpose-built centre where high-achieving and high-ability students can find the support, structure and space to extend their learning beyond a standard VCE program. We offer a suite of programs for senior students from across Victoria's government schools through our state-of-the-art facility and high-quality virtual platform. CHES is located at 669 Chapel Street in South Yarra, next to Melbourne High School, and the facility features our reception area, auditorium, university-standard science laboratories and design rooms, recording studio, staffrooms and a professional learning space. Additionally, CHES provides general-purpose classrooms, collaboration and quiet study areas, and a distinctive rooftop terrace.

In terms of our curriculum programs, CHES is a senior secondary centre-of-excellence, and we offer select VCE subjects and, through our partnerships with universities, we offer Higher Education Studies, which are first-year university subjects that allow students to gain ATAR points and university credits while completing their VCE studies.

Students who undertake a HES or VCE subject at CHES also have access to the student enrichment programs, which includes seminar days at CHES, and masterclasses and expos with universities. We also provide professional learning to teachers across Victoria on meeting the needs of high-ability students.

Students participating in CHES programs remain enrolled at their secondary school and are supported to undertake a program through CHES as part of their VCE program. Working in close partnership with base schools, students will be enrolled in a CHES course for a fraction of their timetable (typically students will study one subject with us) with the remainder of their enrolment and timetable reflecting the subjects being completed at their base school.

CHES has also established partnerships with a foundation network of five local schools (Mac.Robertson Girls High School, Melbourne Girls College, Melbourne High School, Prahran High School and Richmond High School) and those schools will be able to deliver their own VCE classes within the CHES facility when our spaces are not fully utilised for CHES programs.

The overarching strategic objectives of CHES are to:

  • improve access to tertiary courses and strengthen tertiary pathways for students
  • making available enrichment and extension opportunities to further stretch and challenge senior students
  • provide additional opportunities for academic stretch and challenge to high-achieving and high-ability students in rural and regional areas and those in priority cohorts.

To enable students across Victoria to access CHES programs, including rural and regional students, our programs are accessible through virtual platforms as well as on-site. Given our unique offerings, the Minister for Education has approved special criteria for enrolment to a CHES program. CHES uses a hy-flex approach to teaching and state-of-the-art technology to support the integration of all students, regardless of where in Victoria they may be based.

Access to CHES

CHES is an award-winning 4 storey state-of-the-art facility with university-standard resources, located centrally on Chapel Street in South Yarra. Consistent with other inner city vertical schools, there is no staff car parking available on-site but there is convenient access through a range of public transport options nearby.

Selection Criteria

SC1  Demonstrated capacity to perform duties consistent with established guidelines and frameworks, including coordinating and supporting others in respect to specific work functions relevant to the role.

SC2  Demonstrated capacity to work and collaborate with others in a team environment.

SC3  Demonstrated capacity to communicate effectively in a team environment, including high level oral and written communication skills.

SC4  Possess the technical knowledge and expertise relevant to the position.

SC5  Demonstrated capacity to provide advice and support to management and other school staff in respect to the work area.

SC6  A commitment to professional learning and growth for both self and others.

Role

This is a 0.6 (3 days per week) ES Level 1 Range 2 position. An education support class position at this range will perform tasks that are carried out in accordance with guidelines, accepted practice, and school policy under supervision and direction. This may include coordination of other education support class staff within the work area or educational program.

An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students but must not include duties of a teacher as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor. Supervision of students can be required individually or in groups up to 4 in controlled circumstances and where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.

Certification and/or qualifications of up to three years can be required at this level (noting that Registered Nurse is not included at this level, the first level for which is Level 1 range 3).

A role at this range may include:

  • Specific support tasks to achieve outcomes. Typically, this will involve accountability for a single function, (e.g. ensuring data is properly maintained) or the co-ordination of a work area under the direction of the principal or a manager.
  • Assisting teachers, within an educational program, by undertaking specific support tasks or the coordination of the support function.
  • Supervised health and wellbeing support tasks, medical intervention support tasks, or other specialised student/teacher support roles (e.g. enrolled nurses performing the role as described in schedule 3). These roles require specific qualifications and/or training, including roles where further training must be undertaken from time to time. The role is for a specific purpose, for which there will be direct accountability as opposed to support roles that are carried out by a range of staff performing routine tasks under direction.
  • Technical tasks that require a sound knowledge of basic technical and/or scientific principles that are used to develop and adapt work methods and make judgements where there are clear guidelines and limited options. Routine technical support in libraries, science, and information technology would be typical examples.

An education support class position at this range commencing at the base will initially be limited to undertaking routine tasks that are carried out under close supervision and direction. Work that carries some degree of independence will generally involve a limited number of tasks performed on a regular basis where priorities are clear, procedures are well established, and direction is readily available. Subject to any specific qualification and/or training requirement, an education support class employee employed in this range may be progressively required to undertake coordination, specialised student/teacher support tasks, or technical tasks as experience in the role is gained.

Responsibilities

There are three broad areas of responsibility in this position: General Administration/reception, First Aid, and finance. The range 2 responsibilities are:

  • Provide routine clerical or other administrative support responsibilities including general telephone, front office enquiries, mail deliveries, assisting with stock control, supporting organisation of meetings, receiving and initial processing of standard paperwork
  • Maintain, enter and retrieve data from the schools IT systems, such as the school's records system, including computerised student, staff and school records
  • Maintain and update office records, enrolment data, diary records, and basic written records
  • Support or coordinate the preparation of standard routine internal and external communication according to school procedures (e.g. newsletters)
  • Source basic data or factual information from given sources to support school administrative functions, e.g. books, reports, manuals, catalogues, tables, forms, etc.
  • Coordinate the delivery of administrative services within the school
  • In consultation with the business manager and principal, determine and manage work priorities within the school office
  • Develop and implement strategies to ensure effective administration procedures

  • Support the First Aid facilities, provide kits for excursions and assists in delivering First Aid to students
  • Provide medical intervention support that involves a specific medical condition where required, i.e. asthma, diabetes
  • Monitor medications and First Aid materials and ensure supplies are well stocked an in date
  • Ensure student medical plans are current and documented
  • Support the business manager in completion of finance tasks, including but not limited to - family accounts (entering and processing of charges and receipting, receipting via Compass, EFTPOS and BPay, supplying financial information to parents and staff as required, receipting over the counter payments from students and/or parents and support in the processing of Official Purchase Orders.
