About the Role:

The Youth Justice and Education Officer provides support for children and young people (C&YP), aged 10 to 17 years to re-engage with education following involvement with the Youth Justice system. This role is established to address the high level of school disengagement among young people frequently involved in the South Australian Youth Justice system.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Coordinate support for Children and Young People (C&YP) aged 10 to 17 years in the Youth Justice system by liaising with key stakeholders to address barriers to their educational pathway.
  • Provide information and consultancy services to government, legal representatives, non-government agencies, and Education providers to support C&YP.
  • Collaborate and negotiate with stakeholders including the Courts Administration Authority (CAA), to respond to critical and complex issues for C&YP, aiming for improved pathways, navigation of supports and services, and management of risks associated with educational disengagement and justice involvement.
  • Maintain specialised knowledge of programs, projects, and initiatives available for C&YP disengaged from education, along with legislation supporting their access to services, programs, and initiatives.
  • Contribute to the advocacy of systems change and improvement by working with Department for Education staff, and reporting trends, issues and opportunities impacting young people, education, and justice.
  • Work with the team to foster positive culturally inclusive environments, aiming to better understand Aboriginal cultural perspectives and integrate them into daily practice. This includes building strong relationships with cultural partners and services to ensure culturally responsive practice.
  • Provide services to C&YP that are inclusive of Aboriginal people, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and people living with disability, as well as engaging in learning about other cultures and diverse communities to provide a culturally responsive service and improve service outcomes in the Youth Justice context.

Qualifications:

  • Essential an appropriate degree or equivalent which gives eligibility for full membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers

Special Conditions:

The successful applicant is required to gain a Department for Human Services (DHS) working with children check (WWCC) prior to being employed which is required to be renewed every five years before expiry. The incumbent will be required to undertake RRHAN –EC (Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect - Education Care) Facilitator Lead (Masterclass) extended course or the online (Fundamentals) course which will be required to be updated every three years.

Remuneration:

AHP2 $86,950 - $100,729 per annum (1.0 FTE), plus superannuation.
