The Role
The (APS 3/4/5) Communications Technician is responsible for the conduct of maintenance on Communication, Navigation, Surveillance (CNS) equipment either in the workshop or at various sites within the RAAF Williamtown confines.
The position provides extensive exposure to the majority of the CNS equipment in an Air Navigation Support Provider (ANSP) Air Traffic Control environment.
Responsibilities for this role include, but are not limited to:
- Plan maintenance tasks.
- Conduct preventative and corrective maintenance on Communication, Navigation, Surveillance (CNS) systems within the scope of authority.
- Adhere to all Technical and Defence Aviation Safety Regulations (DASR) during the conduct of maintenance.
There is a requirement to work day and evening shifts, some weekend work will be required. Proficiency with computers is required and training in Defence specific computer aided maintenance management programs will be provided.

453 Squadron Maintenance Team in Williamtown, Newcastle (NSW) delivers critical support to Air Traffic Control (ATC) operations by maintaining and managing Communication, Navigation, Surveillance (CNS) equipment systems.
These systems include radar, radios, navigation aids and communication network systems in support of Defence and Civilian ATC. The team is comprised of 24 members.

The ideal Communications Technician is capable of working alone and within small teams while conducting technical maintenance work within an Air Navigation SupportProvider environment, which is bound by strict Defence Aviation Safety Regulations and instructions.
The candidate must be able to effectively communicate both written and verbally with other team members and external stakeholders involved in the maintenance and operation of Communication, Navigation, Surveillance (CNS) equipment.
