The APS 4Assistant Project Officer role will obtain a wide range of skills and experiences that are unique, in that the people will be multi skilled, well-rounded individuals with a broad range of responsibilities encompassing all aspects of project, contract and financial management.
This role grows future leaders in the Capital Facilities and Infrastructure Branch where professional development training and experiences are afforded to those who are committed and aim for achievement and success.
The APS 4 role supports the project team in the planning, development, approval and delivery of capital facilities and infrastructure projects on the Defence estate. The role may also include managing lower complexity and smaller value projects to provide experience in the job for managing more complex and higher value projects in the future.
The role requires project, contract and financial management skills, and it will be highly desirable to have a professional interest in the construction industry.
About our Team
The roles involve working as part of a team to progress projects through the estate lifecycle phases including:
- Understanding the mechanics of Government and relevant legislation and Defence policy;
- Progressing assigned projects with moderate supervision;
- Drafting project plans;
- Assisting to procure and manage contractors using the Defence Infrastructure Panel and the Defence Suite of Facilities Contracts;
- Actively engaging stakeholders including industry, project sponsors, technical policy owners and users;
- Participating in project meetings including Project Control Groups;
- Reviewing contractor deliverables including Monthly Reports;
- Assisting to prepare project documentation including briefs and minutes;
- Assisting to progress projects through approval processes;
- Managing project finances including paying invoices and raising purchase orders;
- Assisting to provide input into various reporting activities;
- Conducting general project administration activities including drafting contract notices; and
- Travelling to site to participate in meetings, consult stakeholders, inspect existing facilities and infrastructure, and monitor construction progress. Regular interstate travel may be required.
The APS 4 role will require:
- Good time management skills and demonstrate attention to detail;
- Be able to adapt and prioritise work to meet deadlines that may change frequently; and
- Work well as an individual and within a team.
The role will have the opportunity to further develop and strengthen your client-side project and contractual management skills, whilst delivering high value, complex projects and programs on Defence bases across Australia. The roles will require well developed oral and written communication and organisational skills to successfully manage and coordinate a range of stakeholders, consultants and contractors, both internal and external to Defence.
