Job description

  • $76,277 - $83,274 + 10% BDCP + up to 15.4% superannuation
  • Canberra - ACT

The Role
As a Technical Intelligence Analyst focussing on guided weapons, you will use your unique technical expertise to analyse and report on weapon systems and defence technologies that may pose threats to Australian forces. You will access and analyse a broad range of information sources, collaborate with other specialists, and use your research and engineering skills to determine the capabilities of missile systems. You will employ specialist analytical tools, methodologies, and techniques to prepare technical assessments that support Defence leadership and the development of future Australian Defence capabilities.

This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known in Defence as a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP). This enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the base salary otherwise payable under the Defence Enterprise Agreement (DEA), for positions in occupational disciplines/classifications that are critical to Defence capability. For further information, please contact the contact officer.

About our Team
DIO’s Weapons and Technical Intelligence branch analyses and characterises foreign weapons systems to ensure the Defence organisation maintains its competitive advantage over potential threats. We work closely with international partners and other members of the Australian Intelligence Community to accomplish this. We value critical thinking, creative problem solving, and the ability to make defensible judgements using incomplete information and engineering reasoning. Our team is small and technically focussed, and provides the opportunity to become a subject matter expert on weapons systems.

We provide training in both engineering and intelligence disciplines, as well as a working environment that offers a range of interesting and challenging work, flexibility to be innovative, talented colleagues, and guidance and mentoring that will help you succeed as a Technical Intelligence Analyst.

Our Ideal Candidate
As the ideal candidate, you will draw information from a range of sources to develop high quality technical assessments that will inform key defence decision makers. You have a professional curiosity and critical thinking skills that help you investigate and evaluate new sources of information. You recognise the strengths and limits of your own knowledge, and seek the expertise of others when required.

You understand the interests of Technical Intelligence customers, including Defence leadership, capability managers, and Australian Defence Force personnel. You will be able to identify significant weapons technology developments and their relevance to these customers. You will be able to understand, or are willing to learn, engineering concepts related to guided weapons. You can communicate assessments based on these ideas to specialist and generalist audiences. You are a strong written and verbal communicator.
