The WHS&E Officer is part of the Proof Range team, and therefore, part of the enabling services that support explosives ordnance testing and evaluation at Joint Proof and Experimental Unit (JPEU). The WHS&E Officer works within the Proof and Experimental Establishment (P&EE) Head Quarters located at Port Wakefield in South Australia. There is also an equivalent position at Graytown in Victoria that can provide peer related advice and support.
The WHS&E Officer directly reports to the Officer Commanding (Site Manager), but functionally reports to the WHS&E Manager and utilizes mature Defence systems to support WHS&E outcomes (including the Sentinel reporting system). The position will work with the Range Trials Manager, Range Manager, Environmental Test Facility Manager and Technical Services Manager and their respective teams.
The WHS&E Officer has a dynamic workload spread across a range of responsibilities including:
- Identification, rectification and monitoring of workplace hazards.
- Investigation of WHS&E events (where appropriate).
- WHS&E system governance.
- Independent workplace and trials audits.
- Key performance and system health indicator monitoring.
- Providing support to unit management and the workforce.
- Liaise with Health and Safety Representatives on base.
- Hazardous Chemical (ChemAlert) system maintenance and data analysis.
About our Team
The Proof Range has approximately eighty (80) staff that plan and conduct explosives ordnance activities and include trades people, warehouse, planning staff and explosives ordnance testing staff.
P&EE Port Wakefield has a range of facilities for use by all employees, including the following:

- Transport assistance Monday to Friday, pick up from RAAF Base Edinburgh to P&EE Port Wakefield (reduced cost for APS employees) Employment at Port Wakefield also currently attracts a Special Defence Locality Assistance allowance of approximately $6,640.00 per annum ($255.36 per fortnight).
JPEU P&EE Port Wakefield is looking for a highly motivated individual to join our team to be a part of our integrated workforce.
Key attributes, skills and experience we are looking for:
- Have experience in providing WHS&E advice in areas including governance, planning, policy interpretation, procedures, continuous improvement, incident investigation and reporting.
- Able to provide specialist WHS&E advice, as they will be working on an explosives ordnance test range.
- Have the skills and knowledge required to work in an integrated workplace with Australian Public Servants, Australian Defence Force and Defence Industry Support Partners.
- Be able to work with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders to provide timely and well-considered advice in relation to WHS&E requirements, in an industrial setting, that carries out test and evaluation activities on explosives ordnance.
- Be dynamic and keen to continuously improve systems and processes in an effort, to ensure that Lean methodologies are used by the team and organization.
- Have strong skills across the Microsoft Office Suite (or similar) and be open to developing strong skills in the range of software platforms used to manage WHS&E and WHS&E reporting.
