Job description

Fiscal Group is seeking analysts with a background in economic analysis and policy development, quantitative analysis or project management to fill a range of roles across the Group.

If you are a team player, have an interest in working on key government priorities, building an evidence base for change and providing advice to the Treasurer on a broad range of policy issues, then we want to hear from you.

We offer a supportive team environment with a constant stream of interesting and rewarding work. Flexible work arrangements, including part-time hours can also be considered.

To be a successful candidate for all roles in Fiscal Group, you will:

  • Be team-orientated, collaborative and have energy and determination to succeed;
  • Have excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to draft high quality briefs for ministers, executives and other stakeholders;
  • Demonstrate the ability to build strong and constructive relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, both internal and external to the Department, as well as across the team;
  • Understand the strategic context and setting for the work of the team, Group and Department;
  • Have enthusiasm and a willingness to learn, demonstrated initiative and sound judgment; and
  • Be open, accountable and of high integrity.

Policy Analysis Roles – Social Policy Division; Labour, Environment, Industry and Infrastructure Division; and Commonwealth-State and Population Division

As a Policy Analyst in Fiscal Group you will analyse policy issues from a whole-of-economy perspective, understand government priorities and stakeholder interests and adapt to quickly changing priorities. Your responsibilities may include: contributing to Budget products, undertaking research, contributing to advice and briefings for Ministers and senior officials on policy proposals, and stakeholder engagement.

In addition to the above Fiscal Group attributes, to be effective in this role you will:

  • have the ability to apply economic and policy frameworks when assessing issues - a good basis in economics is desirable but not essential;
  • work collaboratively to develop policy positions and provide sound advice;
  • possess excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities;
  • be resilient and flexible to meet immediate needs and future challenges; and
  • be able to undertake analysis, recognising links between interconnected issues or programs, and make sound decisions and exercise judgment.

Quantitative Analyst Roles – Commonwealth, State and Population Division; and Budget Policy Division

Fiscal Group is seeking Quantitative Analyst roles across two Divisions looking at a range of subject matter. The Commonwealth, State and Population Division (CSPD) is looking for analysts to help prepare analysis, forecasts and research on population change and migration issues. Experience in the development or application of demographic, economic, econometric or statistical models and techniques would be highly regarded.

The Budget Policy Division is looking for analysts to help prepare analysis and advice for the Treasurer and Treasury Executives on Government decision-making and the fiscal position. This may include analysis on the fiscal outlook, short-term expenditure trends, debt, balance sheet and accounting issues, as well as assisting with developing and communicating the Budget narrative and priorities.

In addition to the above Fiscal Group attributes, to be effective in this role you will:

  • undertake quantitative analysis, which may include analysis on the fiscal impacts of Government decision-making, as well as modelling, analysis and forecasting relating to population and migration.
  • develop and refine population forecasting techniques and models;
  • possess an ability to succinctly convey the findings from your analysis and research;
  • demonstrate initiative, flexibility and capacity to solve problems and work effectively with others; and
  • have data or Microsoft Excel experience. In addition, knowledge of one or more of the following programs is an advantage for those interested in CSPD roles: R, E-views, STATA and PowerBI

Project Management roles - Budget Policy Division

In a project management role you will work across the Treasury and engage with other departments to coordinate delivery of budget updates, including monitoring progress against the budget timetable and coordinating the development of budget products. You will assist in playing a crucial role in budget delivery as the central point of contact for the Treasurer’s Office and Senior Executive.

In addition to the above Fiscal Group attributes, to be effective in this role you will:

  • demonstrate excellent organisational skills and have the ability to manage multiple competing priorities;
  • be a strong collaborator, with demonstrated interpersonal and relationship-management skills; and
  • have data or Microsoft Excel experience.
