Currently, there are around 4.3 million Australians with a disability. The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) implements the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which is one of the biggest social reforms in the country since Medicare. As an Agency, we support more than 600,000 participants with a significant and permanent disability, and the families and carers of those living with disability. For many Australians, this will be the first time they receive the disability support they need. The NDIA is designed to enhance the quality of life and increase economic and social participation for people with disability and will mean a peace of mind for every Australian. 

A new role awaits

The NDIA has an exciting opportunity for a motivated and confident APS5 Media Officer to join our Media Branch, where you will proactively manage media relationships, respond to media enquiries and promote Scheme success.

The Branch is part of the Strategic Communications Division and is responsible for engaging with the community through media, social media, digital media and events.

Please note – These roles are available under Affirmative Measures and generalist streams. The affirmative measure positions are to improve employment opportunities for people with disability and Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people in the Australian Public Service. You will be asked to select the applicable job stream in your application form

Where you can add value
The APS5 Media Officer is responsible for seeking opportunities to promote the Scheme and the work of the NDIA. They will manage and respond to media enquiries and support the monitoring and identification of potential media risks. 

Responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to

  • Producing media and other communications products, including media releases and talking points;
  • Developing media plans to support NDIA announcements and media opportunities; 
  • Working within an after-hours rotational on-call media roster; 
  • Undertaking a wide variety of general tasks as required, including but not limited to managing inbox enquiries, preparing reports on media activities, and providing content to varied internal stakeholders.

Enough about us, let's talk about you 

Previous experience in a media/communications environment will be highly regarded. This could include prior experience as a journalist, member of a media/communications team or political advisor across any tier of government. You can have experience in metropolitan or regional areas and will be passionate about communicating important issues to local, state or national audiences. You will excel when working in a team environment and also be able to carry out tasks independently. 

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the issues affecting diverse communities including those living with disability or possess the ability to develop that understanding. You will have excellent communication skills and the ability to engage effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.

While this role is ideally performed from ACT -Deakin, NSW – Surry Hills, QLD – Brisbane, SA – Adelaide, VIC – Richmond, VIC – Geelong, WA – Perth, TAS – Hobart or NT – Darwin, remote working arrangements may be considered. We intend to fill this role initially in a non-ongoing capacity for 12 months, with the option of another 12 months, however ongoing roles may be offered. 

Successful candidates will be required to undergo a pre-employment National Police History check, Worker Screening check and/or Working with Children Check (where required) and provide evidence of Australian Citizenship.
