Scheme Management Group (SMG) contributes to Comcare’s purpose to promote and enable safe and healthy work through excellence in scheme design and management. SMG is insight driven and works with scheme participants to achieve sustainable and better practice national schemes.
The Office of the Chief Data and Analytics Officer (OCDAO) team is part of SMG and is responsible for ensuring that Comcare takes a mature and sophisticated approach to the management and use of data. To achieve that, the OCDAO works across Comcare to:
- Improve enterprise data governance.
- Foster a data driven organisational culture.
- Deliver better insights through new platforms and capability uplift.
- Ensure data architecture and data models cater for versatile reporting and analytics needs.
- Delineate impacts within our data environment to facilitate a better understanding and implementation of effective controls.
- Create a framework that helps people understand their responsibilities when it comes to data.
- Embed continuous improvement in process and quality of data captures.
- Ensure consistency in the description of common data terms.
- Ensure data is leveraged effectively to solve business problems.
- Enable data capability gaps to be identified and addressed across Comcare so that Groups can be more self-sufficient in working with data.

Overview of the Role
Reporting to the Director, Data Architecture and Engineering, the Data Engineer will support the delivery of Comcare’s Data Strategy through the development of technical solutions aligned with Comcare’s target state data architecture. The Data Engineer will design, development and testing of key technology solutions including ETL data pipelines and semantic layers for use in business analytics and data science applications.
This role will work closely with the other members of the Chief Data and Analytics Officer team, ICT Engineers and business areas to develop reusable data solutions in a cloud-based Microsoft Azure environment. The Data Engineer brings a combination of strong technical and communication skills to work effectively across various technical and non-technical stakeholders. The primary responsibilities of this role are:
- Gather and interpret requirements from business stakeholders and align technical solutions to these requirements.
- Design, develop and test ETL data pipelines, semantic layers, and data transformations for an Azure Data Warehouse and Lakehouse architecture.
- Develop and maintain strong stakeholder relationships built on effective communications, including for non-technical audiences.
- Work collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure the delivery of data sets that are fit for purpose.
- Design and develop technical solutions that address issues of data quality, data integrity, privacy and security.
- Write technical documentation to support further engineering of the platform and downstream data analytics and data science activities.
- Ensure that Data Engineering activities are best practice as well as aligned to Comcare’s Data Governance framework.
- Support the implementation of Comcare’s Data and Analytics Strategy.
Mandatory Experience
- Recent and relevant experience (2 years+) in a Data Engineering role.
Eligibility and Specific Conditions of Employment
- Australian citizenship.
- Character clearance (police records check).
- Health clearance.
- Six months probationary period for new engagements.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Baseline Security Clearance.
