Job description

RSPCA Queensland is a non-government, community-based charity dedicated to improving the lives of domestic, farmed, and native animals in Queensland. Our mission statement is simple but powerful: Together We Change Lives.

About the role

We are looking for an exceptional individual with vast animal welfare experience, an optimistic and pragmatic attitude and an excellent ability to coach and provide feedback in a team environment. Applicants must have a demonstrable ability lead a small team, strong communication skills, administrative skills and a moderate level of computer literacy. Animal Shelter experience coupled with a proven commitment to animal health and welfare is a necessity.

  • Assist the Animal Care Manager in various aspects of managing the facility including operations, maintenance and administrative tasks.
  • Setting a great example for the team by providing high levels of care to animals including general husbandry, enrichment, monitoring health, shelter cleanliness and hygiene.
  • Provide daily support to the team and monitor performance.
  • Work with management to plan and provide on-the-job training for new and existing staff and volunteers.
  • Maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders both internal and external.
  • Liaise with various departments on matters relating to the ongoing care of animals.
  • Actively monitor and ensure staff compliance with all WH&S initiatives and liaise directly with the WH&S representative regarding issues.

Who are we looking for? 

  • A strong background in an animal welfare/care related industry coupled with a broad understanding of the many needs and requirements of animals that are housed in shelter situations, their behaviours and their limitations.
  • Proven ability to engage in self-directed learning.
  • Demonstrable supervisory skills coupled with a proven ability to lead and inspire a small team whilst positively contributing towards its development.
  • Proven ability to engage a high level of initiative coupled with exceptional organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively and confidently at all levels including speaking to large audiences and the media.
  • Administrative experience coupled with a moderate level of proficiency in various MS Office applications, email and online applications including Shelter Mate. 
  • A proven capacity to maintain a pragmatic approach towards the highly emotive issues with which you will be challenged with on a daily basis.
  • A demonstrable commitment to animal health, care and welfare and willingness to uphold the values of RSPCA Qld.

This is a full time, permanent position, including regular weekend shifts to meet the operational requirements of the facility. Remuneration is as per the RSPCA Qld Enterprise Agreement for Shelter Staff.
