The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission (the Commission) was formed on 1 January 2019. The role of the Commission is to protect and enhance the safety, health, wellbeing and quality of life of people receiving aged care. 

The Commission is the national end-to-end regulator of aged care services and the primary point of contact for consumers and providers in relation to quality and safety. Our vision is to support a world-class aged care system driven by empowered consumers who enjoy the best possible quality of life. 

We aim to build confidence and trust in aged care, empower consumers, promote best practice service provision, promote quality standards and hold providers to account for their performance against the expected standards of care. We seek to promote an aged care system that develops safer systems of care, inculcates a culture of safety and quality, and learns from mistakes, while providing the oversight that can assure the community that aged care services are operating as they should, including working on continuous improvement.

Position Description 

We currently have an ongoing opportunity within our Sector Performance and Insights team for an Assistant Director. The Assistant Director, Sector Risk Treatments is responsible for supporting the Director and providing leadership for the planning, coordination and reporting of project/program activities that support the Commission’s regulation of workforce-related responsibilities (24/7 RN responsibility and care minute requirements). 

This position operates within the Sector Performance and Improvement section, within the Regulatory Policy and Intelligence Group of the Commission. The Commission is the national end-to-end regulator of aged care services and the primary point of contact for consumers and providers in relation to quality and safety. The Sector Performance and Improvement section contributes to the Commission’s strategic vision where people receiving care trust and have confidence that aged care services protect and enhance their safety, health, well-being and quality of life. The section oversees a range of programs to help prevent, identify and respond to systemic risks to people who receive aged care. This includes through improving transparency of aged care provider performance information, producing reports that provide insight to risks or better practice to the aged care sector, and managing agreed risk treatments. 

Position Duties 

  • Support the Commission’s sector risk treatment strategy (workforce-related responsibilities) to support and influence providers, consumers and other stakeholders in the aged care system in a manner that optimises aged care consumer welfare. 
  • Support the design and delivery of projects/programs of work: 
  • to ensure collaborative working relationships with the Commission and external stakeholders. 
  • to improve and support the capability of aged care providers. 
  • to help consumers understand and exercise their rights and expectations with respect to their care provider. 
  • Work collaboratively with key stakeholders on design and delivery of evaluation of project/program activities. 
  • Identify and respond appropriately to risks and issues. 
  • Work constructively with internal and external stakeholders on 
  • The expansion of existing Sector Performance reporting and development of discreet subject specific reporting on workforce-related responsibilities. 
  • Insights translation on workforce management and impacts on quality, safe and continuous care, including information sharing with the sector to influence Sector Performance
  • Design and delivery of evaluation of project/program activities. 
  • Provide leadership and build the capacity of staff to undertake their roles efficiently and professionally and to meet expected standards of service and quality. 
  • Adhere to the APS Values and Code of Conduct. 

Position Eligibility Requirements 

  • Strong leadership and management skills and the ability to build capability and provide support to staff within the section. 
  • Experience planning and managing projects, including ability to use, or quickly learn, project management software. 
  • Experience providing secretariat support to Steering Committees and working groups, including planning and organisation of meetings, preparation of agenda papers, drafting of minutes, and correspondence and advice to the Director to provide to the Chair on emerging risks and issues. 
  • Ability to use data to identify issues and insights. 
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of behavioural insights to influence the behaviour of entities. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and the ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with key stakeholders. 

Position Notes  

Salary offered will be between $109,853 and $125,288 per annum depending on skills and experience. In addition, 15.4% superannuation will be paid. 

 *Note; these figures do not include the newly agreed APS Enterprise Agreement bargaining pay offer.
