The Data and Economic Analysis Centre (DEAC), is a young and dynamic division within the Department of Home Affairs.
Data is our business. We work alongside our colleagues in the department to analyse, transform and use data to deliver better outcomes for the Australian public. We are dedicated to innovation and transformation, using data science, automation and artificial intelligence to achieve faster and more effective solutions.
DEAC is comprised of four areas, led by the Chief Data Officer.
- Data Governance - Provides enterprise-wide support and strategic oversight of data quality, standards, governance, maturity, compliance and guardrails for data and AI systems across the portfolio
- Data Services - Delivers data products (BI, statistics, publications) and automation services to maximise the availability of trusted data and support data-driven and timely decision making
- Data Science & Applied AI - Delivers data science and AI prototypes and products using methodologies such as machine learning, predictive modelling, computer vision and large language models to support decision making and increase operational efficiency
- Economic Analysis - Provides economic insights and analysis that contribute to evidence-based policy development, optimised resource allocation and balancing risk mitigation (national security) and economic growth.

You will work closely with other data professionals, customers and partner agencies to scope and confirm requirements and develop products that support the strategic and operational needs of the Department.

About our roles
Assistant Director (Customised Statistics Development and Reporting), Data Services
- Prepare and analyse data, and be able to generate insights from data
- Advise and provide assistance to policy, program or enabling areas, in the use of specialised datasets and self-service statistical data products to meet business management and executive reporting needs
- Develop and maintain a sound understanding of important business rules underpinning relevant datasets and databases
- Review data products and statistical reports to provide sound advice to business areas on improvements in data presentation, data interpretation and data sources
- Develop detailed responses to complex data queries and product requests utilising Structured Query Language (SQL) or Statistical Analysis System (SAS), as well as other tools, to query relevant data stores
- Lead and mentor junior staff.
Qualifications or experience
- Sound SQL query development skills or Statistical Analysis System (SAS) use skills, including the ability to interrogate databases efficiently
- Tertiary qualifications in information communication technology (ICT), or data related disciplines.
Assistant Director, RPA Data Engineer, Data Services
- Lead the design and implementation of automation projects that are fit for purpose and optimised for scalability
- Lead and mentor a team of developers to deliver consistently high-quality automation solutions for business process owners
- Oversee the analysis and resolution of technical and application problems reported by business process owner
- Ensure quality by conducting design reviews at check-points to ensure all solutions meet mandatory quality standards and
- Work with the leadership group to ensure alignment with department and whole-of-Government objectives and strategy.
Qualifications and experience:
- Tertiary degree in IT or equivalent experience
- 2+ years of experience using UiPath product suite (Studio, Orchestrator) or other RPA technologies.
Data Science Manager (Technical), Data Science
- Lead teams of data professionals to design, build, maintain and configure of Data Science/AI products in line with departmental policy and guardrails
- Work in partnership with the Data Science Managers to ensure technical delivery supports overarching business and departmental objectives
- Effectively communicate and explain technical considerations and solutions to non-technical stakeholders
- Provide expert advice on best-practice and safe use of Data Science and AI
- Ensure appropriate action is taken to anticipate, communicate, investigate and resolve risks in systems and services.
Qualifications or experience:
- Tertiary degree in data science, computer science, maths, science or other related disciplines (Essential)
- At least five years' experience designing, building, and delivering data science products
- Experience in cloud computing.

To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.
The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance and an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).

The Department of Home Affairs offers an attractive remuneration package, including salary, superannuation benefits and flexible working conditions appropriate to the level of the position.
