Assistant Financial Accountant

Location: Parramatta CBD (Flexible working arrangement)

Employment type: Ongoing, Full-time (1 vacancy)

Salary: Clerk Grade 5/6, $93,295 to $102,941 p.a. plus employers’ contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading

Your role

We are looking for an Assistant Financial Accountant to complement and enhance the Financial Reporting Statutory Entities team. This position offers opportunities to involve various tasks in financial operations such as analysing and reconciling various General Ledger accounts, process journals, and provide quality services, support and advice to a variety of business units across the Department of Communities and Justice. You will assist in resolving enquiries, process customer service requests and monitor accounting policies and procedures compliance. You will be working in collaboration with our stakeholders to meet compliance and statutory reporting requirements.

What you’ll do

As part of the Financial Management & Reporting team, you will be responsible for supporting the management of the Department’s statutory and financial reporting obligations for the statutory entities for the DCJ cluster. Specifically,

  • Reporting to the Manager Compliance and Governance, the candidate will assist in the financial operational activities such as general ledger reconciliation; month-end journals, and monthly analysis of accounts.
  • Actively participating in the planning of the financial reporting process, delivering financial statements, and preparing accounting position papers.
  • Assist in the ongoing compliance with evolving accounting procedure and policy.
  • Liaise with business units to provide support on any financial reporting matters.
  • Assist in the annual statutory audit process by liaising with the Audit Office and various finance divisions.
  • Assist in any ad-hoc financial operational activities and reporting requirements.

What we’re looking for

The ideal candidate will bring the following skills:

  • Attention to detail, high level of commitment, can do attitude and can work under pressure
  • Excellent time management and communication skills
  • Have a good level of analytical and problem solving ability.
  • Willingness to be flexible with duties
  • Shows good team spirit and takes initiative to demonstrate proactive involvement
  • Ability to interpret Accounting Standards and Treasury guidelines and apply them appropriately

Essential Requirements include:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Accounting, Business, Commerce or related discipline, or demonstrated equivalent experience.
  • Prior working experience in financial statements preparation (end to end) and audit.
  • Work experience in financial operational and accounting matters and providing technical accounting support.
  • Experience in SAP and other ERP systems and strong Excel skills and experience in financial modelling.
  • Excellent communication (both written & verbal) and strong stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Results-driven with a focus on continuous improvement in financial management and customer service.
  • Sound knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards, including the latest current and future developments.
