Murrup Barak means 'the spirit of Barak' in Woiwurrung language. This name was chosen to honour the memory of William Barak - a visionary Wurundjeri leader.Operating within the University of Melbourne, the purpose of Murrup Barak is to provide a safe, responsive, and empowering service to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Murrup Barak closely collaborates with colleagues across the Student and Scholarly Services division, Chancellery and Indigenous Leadership of the University to achieve outcomes in Indigenous outreach, engagement, retention and success.About the role
The Associate Director will be responsible for successful translation and delivery of a range of University-wide initiatives to support the implementation of the Indigenous Student Plan and the annual priorities of Murrup Barak to transform the Indigenous student experience. The Associate Director will be responsible for maintaining the efficiency of Murrup Barak and will have operational oversight of the centre including supervision, resourcing and budget.With a number of direct reports, the Associate Director will play a vital role in motivating and coaching staff, identifying opportunities for professional development, growth and career progression. The Associate Director will represent Murrup Barak on a range of the Universities' student-focused committees and working groups. You will have excellent people management skills with the ability to navigate and lead teams through programs of change. You will have a well demonstrated understanding of the cultural, political, and education landscape for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander People and communities.With the ability to align day-to-day operations with the Murrup Barak's strategic objectives, you will be skilled in providing ongoing support and motivation to your team. You will have a strong leadership presence with the ability to navigate high-level stakeholder engagement and influence key decision makers. You'll have a strong passion for driving Indigenous student success and improving educational outcomes across the university. You will be highly strategic with strengths in risk management, program design and project delivery.Selection Criteria * Postgraduate qualifications or substantial progress towards postgraduate qualifications and extensive management experience in a relevant industry; and demonstrated operational leadership and strategic program delivery OR an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills with a demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders and manage sensitive stakeholder relationships including with government and peak bodies.
  • High-level organisational and problem-solving skills, including the ability to coordinate multiple functions and meet competing deadlines; to work proactively, forecast risks and respond to unexpected situations.
  • Demonstrated track-record designing, managing and delivering complex and/or high-profile programs and/or projects aligned with organisational strategic priorities.
  • Proven high level strategic management, analytical, risk management and project management skills in a multi-disciplinary environment and a record of achievement in delivering key projects and operational services.
  • Highly-developed leadership skills and a proven ability to establish effective collaborative relationships to build organisational capability and responsiveness.
