Position Purpose
The Aviation Screening Officer's (ASO) role performs duties relevant to the security of persons and property at the airport as defined by the contract with Sydney Airport Corporation Limited, Qantas, (Sydney Airport) and Individual Airlines in accordance with the appropriate legislation. The Aviation Security division encompasses the International and Domestic Terminals at Sydney Airport and special off-site contracts where screening services are required. - Control the flow of people and goods through the screening point
- Greet the customer and communicate effectively
- Request customers and other persons entering the sterile area, to place itemsof hand luggage and metallic items from their person onto the conveyor
- In (a) the ASO is authorised to allow the item to continue to the point at whichit is claimed by the customer. In (b) or (c) the ASO must alert the bag searchoperative to initiate a physical examination of the item.
- Maintain complete concentration for the entire twenty (20) minute rotationwhilst not engaging in any conversation whilst x-ray unit is in use
- View images of items passing through the x-ray unit and decide if thecontents fall into one of three categories: (a) safe, (b) possible threat, or (c)obvious threat
- In the event that a passenger is required to undertake a physical examinationor the source of the alarm cannot be detected by electronic means, the ASOis to advise the team leader.
- May perform hand-held metal detector search of any person who passesthrough the unit and initiates the alarm device. May ask for the production ofitems in that area i.e. pockets to satisfy himself/herself that items areacceptable
- Be alert to the x-ray monitor operator to undertake a physical examination ofgoods to ensure no contents passing through the screening point are a (b) or(c)
- Greet the customer and effectively communicate the required process
- Maintain control of the item being searched
- In the event that a person alarms, where possible advise the person whatarea of the body is alarming, request they return to the public area and divestitems
- Permit access to those persons who negotiate the walk-through metaldetector (WTMD) without activating the alarm
- ETD must be undertaken on a random continuous basis
- In the event that a person or their hand luggage records a positive test result,the matter is made known to the Supervisor and dealt with in accordance withStandard Operating Procedures.
- When conducting Primary and ETD duties ASO's may be required to frisk (i.e.pat down) persons entering the sterile areaAll these procedures are carried out with the consent of the passenger or persons passing through the screening point. In the event that the consent is withdrawn at any stage, the matter must be referred to the Team Leader who will advise the customer that they have a right of refusal but this means they will not be permitted to enter the sterile area.

- Hold an Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC)
