Multicultural Australia is a leading Queensland multicultural organisation, providing settlement services for migrants, refugees and people seeking asylum. We aim to grow multicultural values across our State and to empower newly arrived Queenslanders from diverse cultural and language backgrounds through advocacy, community development and a range of client services.
About the role:
Multicultural Australia is currently offering opportunities for Dari, speaking Bicultural Support Workers to work as part of our Humanitarian Support Program team. There is two role available on a Part-time, maximum term (6-Months) basis and is based in Brisbane .
The primary purpose of this team is to provide welcome, safety and security to clients under the program, while ensuring they are linked with essential services and appropriate housing options to ensure a smooth transition to life in Australia. Among other duties, the successful candidate will:
- Assist Case Managers to complete Psycho-social case assessments and case reviews by providing language support and cultural advice and attending outreach appointments with clients;
- On occasion support the wider HSP team with conducting settlement services including airport reception, local area orientation, assistance to attend medical appointments, assistance in navigating the rental market, ensuring clients are supported to arrange appropriate appointments and access information in order to develop their Lifeskills capacity;
- On occasion, work outside normal hours to attend airport reception and provide on-arrival support to clients;
- Cross collaboration with other program areas such as the Employment, Accommodation, Lifeskills, and Community Development teams in order to gain the best settlement outcomes for clients;
- Assist clients to access a range of services, information and programs delivered by external agencies and sources;
- Provide emotional support and social inclusion assistance to clients as part of day to day interaction;
- Review client referrals and client/case documentation, checking for accuracy and completeness;
- Provide mentoring to clients who appear to be struggling to reach settlement milestones, ensuring escalation to Case Managers as required;
- Provide administrative assistance to the HSP team, including mail support and delivery, uploading documents to databases and ensuring relevant information is submitted within timelines and operational framework;
- Participate in activities at drop-in centres, networking and community awareness raising activities, and community engagement activities as directed by the relevant Case Manager or Team Leader.
What qualifications and skills do I need?
You will be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and have effective communication and interpersonal skills. As well as having a confident and positive personality, you will possess:
- Proficient language skills (reading, writing and speaking), in Dari, preferably from Afghanistan cultural and community background;
- Sound and accurate knowledge and understanding of Australian culture and systems which are relevant to client settlement, along with the ability to explain information about important life skills so that clients are able to independently establish their lives in Australia;
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to work cross culturally, assisting young people to develop connections with people from their culture of origin, along with other meaningful social connections,
- Demonstrated ability to provide appropriate cultural advice to both clients and staff of Multicultural Australia;
- Demonstrated commitment to working with all members of the community, irrespective of cultural and religious affiliations and a commitment to social justice and human rights;
Successful candidate will be required to have a valid driver’s licence, police check and apply for a Working with Children Blue Card.
