ASHM Health (ASHM) formerly known as Australasian Society for HIV, Viral Hepatitis and Sexual Health Medicine is seeking expressions of interest from individuals interested in joining our Board. ASHM’s Board members hold the responsibility of upholding accountability, ensuring effective governance and facilitating the smooth operation of our organisation. ASHM is a Public Company limited by guarantee and an ACNC registered health promotion charity. Board members are voluntary and non-executive Directors and are expected to play a role in overseeing the functioning of the organisation, participating in 4-5 Board meetings per year. Ideally, at least one face-to-face Board meeting is held each year.
About ASHM
- As the peak body in Australia ASHM provides training, accreditation, resources and guidelines to support the health workforce in relation to HIV, viral hepatitis and sexual health and works collaboratively to prevent HIV, viral hepatitis and sexually transmissible infections, and to preserve and protect health choices of individuals.
- ASHM advises on national policy and advocates for policy change and is also a standing member of the Blood Borne Viruses and Sexually Transmissible Infections Standing Committee (BBVSS) of the Australian Health Protection Principle committee (AHPPC), providing advice to Australian Health Ministers’ Advisory Council (AHMAC) on strategic policy, programs, social issues and activities related to HIV, viral hepatitis and STIs.
- ASHM provides professional conference organising services for primarily for ASHM but also related health organisations.
- ASHM employs approximately 75 staff
ASHM’s Board currently comprises of 10 medical or research professionals. ASHM is looking to broaden the skill base on its Board and would therefore welcome applications from individuals with financial expertise to sit on its Board as well as on its Finance, Risk Management and Audit Committee (FRMA).
In addition to the prerequisite financial skills, further desirable strategic or functional skills in all or any of the following would be advantageous:
- Adult education, in particular on-line platforms and innovations
- Legal
- International aid/development
Applicants should also have an interest in ASHM’s work and experience of the charitable sector. Successful applicants will need to comply with ASHM’s various policies, including its code of conduct.
The Role
The ASHM Board provides governance and strategic leadership to the organisation and is comprised of people with a wide range of skills and backgrounds. Director positions are voluntary, however reasonable travel expenses are covered. Board members’ terms are two years (with a plus one option).
Meetings and Time Commitment
The ASHM Board of Directors plans to meet online three times a year (typically 2 hour meetings). The 4th planned meeting is held as a full day face to face meeting and is usually held in Sydney (late January or early February). Preparation for meetings and any sub-committee duties will require additional time. The Finance, Risk Management and Audit Committee (FRMA) typically meets 4 times per year (90-minute meetings).
Expectations of Board Members
- Attend and actively participate in meetings
- Stay informed about Board matters, prepare themselves well for meetings, and reviews and comment on minutes and reports
- Serve on sub-committees or Board Advisory Groups (in this case the FRMA committee as the possible chair)
- Build a collegial working relationship with other Board members that contributes to a consensual approach to decisions
- Utilise own skills, experience and knowledge to support the growth and success of the organisation
- Help communicate and promote ASHM’s mission, purpose and services
- Become familiar with ASHM’s strategy, services, resources, finances, and market/audience.
