As part of Student Success, the Careers Service supports all students and recent graduates towards a positive graduate outcome.The role is part of one of our three designated Careers & Employability teams responsible for ensuring our current students and recent graduates have access to the best possible curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular employability and enterprise provision. The portfolios of responsibility are as follows:
- HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences)
- SAgE (Science, Agriculture and Engineering)
- FMS (Faculty of Medical Sciences) and Careers Central Offer
- In collaboration with your Senior Manager and Faculty Engagement Manager, and informed by sector, industry and student need, design and deliver a range of curricular and extracurricular career education workshops, events and other pedagogically informed initiatives to develop the employability and enterprise skills of the University’s students and graduates
- Conduct 1-1 careers guidance sessions with students and graduates of any degree discipline and offer in-depth careers guidance interviews to students and graduates from a designated caseload of Academic Schools, when needed.
- Using your guidance expertise, provide a consultancy service in your faculty team, advising key contacts in schools on the best ways to support and develop their students’ employability and enterprise skills
- Work with colleagues across Student Success using your expertise to lead on ensuring the design and delivery of our provision considers the needs and requirements of designated service user groups (e.g., students with additional needs, international students, Early Career Researchers, or Degree Apprentices)
- In partnership with faculty team colleagues and supported by the Faculty Engagement Manager, negotiate and monitor annual plans for your designated area of responsibility in line with the strategic direction of the Faculty and Service. This involves analysing Management Information data to inform the development of appropriate interventions and evaluation plans
- In collaboration with the Employability and Enterprise Academic Lead in your allocated school(s), identify and develop relationships with key colleagues to develop a network of academic and professional services colleagues who can champion employability and its associated benefits
- Work with teams across the Student Success Unit and in your designated Faculty to identify and facilitate opportunities for employers to contribute to curricular and co-curricular interventions in support of students’ skills development.
- Develop effective networks external to the institution, and relevant professional societies, to share, pilot and further good practice
- Contribute to cross-service themes and lead and/or take part in cross-service projects
- With direction and support from the Faculty Engagement Manager, write appropriate reports and papers and make presentations to a variety of audiences so that the work of the Careers Service is recognised for quality of practice.
- Undertake any other duties reasonably requested in the delivery of the Careers Service’s strategic objectives including occasional out of hours/evening work
- An up-to-date understanding of the student and graduate labour market, particularly relating to students’ skills development, employer selection processes and choices around employment, self-employment and further study
- Awareness of current national developments and issues relating to student destinations and skills development, Careers Education, Information and Guidance
- A good understanding of the HE sector: its business, latest developments and issues
- High level career guidance skills
- Ability to devise and deliver interactive group sessions and workshops
- Self-reliance skills to manage and prioritise a complex workload
