THE ROLE
Develop and prepare nutritious, flavoursome, seasonal meals in accordance with the menus at each centre and that are prepared and presented on time. Ensure the preparation of meals meets the specific dietary needs of children with food allergies, food intolerances, and religious or lifestyle requirements.
Key Accountabilities include:
- Maintain a safe, clean, and hygienic kitchen environment by competing all daily and periodical cleaning tasks, undertaking food safety checks, following food handling and infection control policies and procedures, and maintaining a high standard of personal presentation and hygiene
- Place food orders using the designated ordering system and follow relevant procedures and processes
- Manage stock levels and stock rotation, implement appropriate food storage practices and track and minimise food wastage
- In consultation with the Centre Manager, cater for centre events such as family evenings, morning/afternoon teas, and other celebrations as required
ABOUT YOU
You must be experienced in cooking for large numbers and providing individualised meals in accordance with dietary preferences and food allergies, which may change at short notice.
You show creativity in meal planning and preparation, enjoy cooking, and will communicate regularly and clearly with centre staff and parents to ensure the dietary needs of the children are met.
You demonstrate initiative, have a solutions focused mindset, and are driven to achieve excellence in the workplace. You also share our organisational values of Courage, Agility, Rigour, Empowerment and Support (CARES) and commit to these being visible in your actions and words.
To be successful, you will need:
- Demonstrated experience in cooking for large numbers (50+) and/or for groups of young children
- Understanding of food safety and preparing meals for children with specific dietary needs
- Excellent organisational and time management skills
- Ability to establish, build and maintain relationships with colleagues and customers
- Ability to work independently
You will be expected to have:
- Certificate in Safe Food Handling and Hygiene
- Certificate of Commercial Cookery or equivalent
- Certificate in Nutrition and Menu Planning (not essential but highly regarded)
- First Aid Certificate
- Medium level computer literacy
- Current Working With Children Check

ABOUT OUR CENTRE
Waratah Cottage is a multi-service model centre, offering two different service types within our operations:
- 47 place long day care operating 50 weeks of the year for children aged six weeks to six years
- 30 place vacation care operating during school holiday periods only for children aged five to twelve years
