How will I help?
The Chief Engineer, Payments API will be part of the Westpac Institutional Bank GTS & Payments team.
Westpac's Payments API provides the building blocks of re-useable 'Payments' capabilities. Removing duplication from customer-facing channels and creating consistency across backend payment processors and schemes, it is the strategic enabler for simplifying our Payments technology estate.
The Chief Engineer is the technology owner for the Payments API platform. The apply their expert knowledge to lead the engineering teams responsible for building and supporting the operation of the platform and maintain its strategy and technical direction. Their focus is software engineering to support a mission critical, resilient, and performant 'system', progressive simplification of the legacy environments, and driving benefits realisation.
Reflecting Westpac's increased focus on Technology Simplification we are re-organising how we approach delivery for the Payments API. The Payments API platform team will come together with the Chief Engineer (and dedicated Service / Product Owner and Delivery Owner) providing the leadership focus and capacity to drive the platform roadmap and accelerate delivery of the backlog.
The ideal candidate will have 15+ years in IT / Software Engineering / Architecture with a background in financial services and/or payments.
This role is based in Sydney.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Own and maintain the platform roadmap, ensuring fit for purpose, designed for run, and evergreen sustainability.
- Develop and curate the backlog and strategy for progressive simplification through migration to the Payments API
- Collaborate with architecture and other Chief Engineers (particularly Digital and Payments) to understand solutions and roadmaps across the enterprise.
- Lead a culture of engineering-led continuous improvement.
- Ensure engineering and coding guidelines and standards are in place and used, leveraging, and extending enterprise standards wherever possible.
- Accountable for 'Design for Run' and Operational Readiness certification. Lead teams in 3rd Level Support to assist in timely service restoration and root cause investigation for production incidents.
- Implement engineering and work practices to improve code quality, team cohesion, and platform knowledge. Eg. pair programming, code review
- Ensure engineering and coding guidelines and standards are in place and used, leveraging, and extending enterprise standards wherever possible.
- Maintain the platform engineering resource strategy.
- Provide performance management, coaching and support career progression for engineers in the team.
- Support the team, including delivery leads and squad facilitators, to manage an effective backlog and agile operating cadences.

What do I need?
To be set up for success in this role, you will be able to demonstrate:
15+ years in IT / Software Engineering / Architecture
Proven experience:
Building and leading teams of software engineers in an agile environment. You're still hands on when the team needs it
Building and running mission-critical solutions. Zero downtime. Low latency. High throughput
Relational and non-relational data stores
Messaging patterns and technologies (eg. MQ, Kafka)
Modern containerised, microservices and cloud technologies
Well versed with architecture patterns, integration patterns, DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering practices
Financials Services and/or Payments preferable.
Tertiary qualifications in Information Technology or equivalent IT experience
Relevant Cloud platform certification
