The Region

Maranoa region is a local government area located in southwest Queensland approximately 500km west of Brisbane. The town of Roma is the administrative headquarters of the region. It is led by the Mayor and eight Councillors. With around 400 staff it has a typical Operating Budget of $90M+ and annual Capital Expenditure around $55M. Council manages the third longest road network of any local government in Queensland, the Roma Saleyards are the largest livestock selling arena in Australia and the Roma Airport is one of the busiest airports in regional Queensland accommodating daily one-hour flights to Brisbane.

The region is thriving with GRP for the Maranoa sitting at $2.78 billion and increasing every year. The Maranoa's economic foundations are built on a strong agricultural sector, mining and energy industries and health services. The upward trend experienced over the past ten years is predicted to continue making the Maranoa a wonderful place for residents, visitors, investors, and workers.

The Role

Council is looking for an exceptional leader who shares Council’s vision for a thriving, inclusive and sustainable future and who will help shape the future of the region and leave a lasting legacy of progress and prosperity. The new CEO will be renowned for their strategic acumen and genuine passion for community engagement and service delivery. 

Key responsibilities and expectations of the CEO position include:

  • Providing visionary leadership and strategic direction to advance the goals and priorities of Maranoa Regional Council.
  • Fostering a culture of innovation, inclusivity and accountability within the organisation, empowering staff to be part of business improvement and deliver exceptional services and outcomes.
  • Ensuring effective and transparent governance practices, including fiscal responsibility, regulatory compliance, and stakeholder communication.
  • Collaborating with fellow Councillors, officials, and community leaders to develop and implement policies and programs that promote economic growth, infrastructure development and social well-being.
  • Building and nurturing strategic partnerships with government agencies, industry stakeholders and community organisations to address challenges and seize opportunities.
  • Experience in contributing to the sustainable development and management of assets, services, and projects; and

About You

With significant leadership experience (preferably in a local government environment) you have a proven track record of experience managing staff numbers comparable to the size of Maranoa in a CEO or Director level role.

Understandably, you will have experience in controlling major budgets, have managed a large and diverse workforce, overseen major projects, dealt with a range of professionals and consultants, and worked with representatives of other levels of government and the wider community at the highest level.

Demonstrating a proven track record in developing and working with a team of specialist managers and maintaining their strategic focus and direction will be another key component to your experience in addition to the following:

  • well-developed knowledge of the legislative framework applicable to the role.
  • a demonstrated record of assisting elected members to set strategic direction and then implementing Council’s policy and decisions.
  • the right balance of personal attributes: inclusiveness and decisiveness, strength, resilience, and diplomacy.

You will also be known for your energy, motivation, and passion for getting things done and for your genuine empathy and ability to ‘connect’ with people.
