About Traditional Credit Union

Traditional Credit Union (TCU) occupies a unique position as the only Indigenous-owned credit union in Australia. TCU has been delivering employment opportunities and financial services in remote Indigenous communities since December 1994, when traditional owners formed TCU as a replacement for banks that were closing branches and exiting remote areas.

As an Indigenous organisation, owned by Indigenous customers and guided by Indigenous leaders, who form the majority of the Board, TCU has a strong understanding of the culture of Australia’s First Nations peoples. We understand the needs of the communities we support because we employ Indigenous staff from those communities.

TCU maintains 14 branches, including Head Office, serving over 7,500 majority indigenous members, and employing 85 staff of which over 80% are indigenous.

The Opportunity

Traditional Credit Union (TCU) is looking for a full-time Chief Executive Officer based in Casuarina, Darwin.

In this pivotal role, the CEO will report directly to the Board of Directors, leading the organisation's strategic, operational, and financial performance, while embodying TCU's commitment to Indigenous communities and culture.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Providing strategic leadership and direction to the organisation
  • Fostering effective community and corporate engagement
  • Managing financial operations to ensure sustainability and growth
  • Developing innovative products and services catering to Indigenous communities
  • Building and leading a high-performing team to achieve organisational goals
  • Ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Guiding TCU through strategic transformation and challenges
  • Advocating for Indigenous economic empowerment and financial inclusion
What You Will Bring

To qualify, you will need a relevant tertiary qualification in finance, business, economics, or similar. A minimum of 10 years leadership experience, with at least 5 years in senior management roles in the retail banking or financial services sector, will also be essential.

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • Proven experience in corporate transformation projects and change management
  • Demonstrated ability in digital and channel management
  • Strong background in stakeholder engagement
  • Experience working within a multicultural, Indigenous environment (preferred but not mandatory)

In your role as CEO within a diverse organisation, the following personal skills are equally crucial. You are someone who:

  • Demonstrates strategic prowess in planning and execution, coupled with exceptional communication ability, ensuring clarity and effectiveness in all interactions
  • Embraces and promotes diversity within a multicultural environment, fostering an inclusive workplace where every voice is valued and heard
  • Shows flexibility and inventiveness, overcoming obstacles and devising innovative approaches while deeply committed to grasping the nuances of Indigenous cultures
  • Demonstrates pragmatism and resourcefulness in resource management

This role is not just a job, it's a unique opportunity in a unique organisation to make a difference and empower Indigenous communities through innovative banking solutions. We're looking for a visionary leader who is not only adept in the technical and financial aspects of banking but also deeply respects and understands Indigenous cultures and communities.

Benefits

Traditional Credit Union is committed to providing staff with a flexible, family friendly environment and rewards staff fairly, equitably and consistently in accordance with the organisation's values.

A remuneration package circa $300,000 (negotiable with skills and experience) will be available to the successful candidate. A car for work and limited personal use is provided, as is Relocation Assistance to assist candidates living outside of the NT to make their move to Darwin

Opportunities like this don't come along often and for the right person this role represents an exciting and unique challenge to bring an organisation, it's people and it's customers into a new chapter of their growth.

This is more than a job, it's a calling to lead, innovate, and empower.
