Chief Operating Officer

Full Time

St John Ambulance Australia is seeking a suitably qualified Chief Operating Officer to support the growth and impact of the organisation.

This position is based in the Australian Office, located in Canberra (ideally) and is a senior executive role working closely with the Chief Executive Officer.

The Chief Operating Officer will be responsible for providing strategic and business services to support the organisation’s mission. The primary functions include the leadership of National Finance functions and National Training Team – in addition to supporting the CEO with HR, Governance, Legal, Policy, Cybersecurity, and special projects.
Role Requirements: 

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

  • Strong financial, operational and some commercial experience, ideally with accounting or finance background. 
  • Tertiary qualifications in accounting, business administration or other relevant area
  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (or equivalent, or commitment to attaining)
  • Apply knowledge of Training functions and accountabilities, ideally within a Registered Training Organisation context
  • Apply knowledge of HR generalist functions regarding workforce planning, cultural reform, employee engagement and development, communications, employee relations, WHS, equal opportunity and diversity, recruitment and retention
  • Experience working with a Board of Directors including the provision of executive level briefing documents and reports on key topics/issues related to the operations portfolio.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and clarify complex operational issues and associated financial and risk implications.
  • Proven track record in leading and developing teams to deliver integrated customer-oriented solutions, creating a value based, culture of performance.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead change, with disciplined project planning and people centered change management principles.
  • Demonstrated experience in business planning and reporting and providing information in an executive format.
  • Demonstrated experience in improving operational processes and controls in a practical, value-added manner.
  • Demonstrated experience managing commercial contracts or supplier agreements.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, oral communication skills with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) and relate well to staff, internal and external stakeholders.
  • High level analytical, problem solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and show initiative.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy with tasks.
  • Ability to work under pressure, work on multiple initiatives and be highly organized and adaptable.
  • Collaborative leadership style, being a team player with a positive ‘can do’ attitude.
  • Be adaptable and willing to get their hands dirty as and when required

DESIRABLE

  • External skills – presenting, public speaking.
  • High level of general computer literacy (Financial software (eg. Xero, MYOB), Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Databases, Mac OS X)

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • The position requires flexibility including after hours and weekend commitments.
  • Interstate travel will be required.
  • A full unrestricted Australian work permit or visa. 
  • A National Police Check is required to be obtained upon appointment to the role and every three years thereafter. 
  • Appointment to this position is subject to maintaining a valid Working with Children Check
