What you'll be doing

The NSLHD Nursing and Midwifery Workforce will be compassionate, competent, confident, contemporary, capable and committed to leading person-centred health care .

Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD) Prevention & Response to Violence Abuse & Neglect (PARVAN) Sexual Assault Service (SAS) provides a 24/7 integrated psychosocial, medical & forensic service to patients of all ages presenting with concern of sexual assault (SA). 
 
The Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) role’s primary purpose is to use their knowledge, experience & skills to provide specialist integrated medical & forensic examinations to people aged ≥ 14 years following SA. The position will contribute to establishing a state-wide clinical placement program for trainee SAS examiners & participate in a 24/7 on-call SAS team roster.
 
The FNE will provide clinical leadership, consultation, research, education & strategic planning for SAS team & SA nursing field. They are a role model and provide clinical supervision to nursing staff & consult on the safe & appropriate use of nursing practices. They will contribute to developing educational resources for clients, staff & stakeholders & ongoing analyses of practice & the impact of new directions on the SAS team. They will contribute to clinical & strategic leadership including development, implementation & evaluation of strategic service changes and contribute to local, state & national specialist clinical groups.
 
The FNE will follow protocols established by the NSW Ministry of Health as outlined in PD202020_006 Responding to Sexual Assault (Adult and Child) Policy & Procedures. They will work in partnership with other NSW Health staff, NSW Police & judiciary to ensure provision of high quality, culturally safe integrated health & forensic care for patients following SA concerns. They may contribute to developing integrated medical & forensic care for various groups aligning with VAN Health system reforms at both service & speciality levels including assisting in the management of children < 13 years & victims of domestic & family violence.

People of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander background encouraged to apply.Candidates will need to meet the following criteria:

  1. Current nursing registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and a minimum of 5 years full time equivalent post registration experience and a minimum of 3 years clinical nursing experience in a relevant clinical speciality (e.g. sexual health, family planning, women's health, obstetrics and gynaecology and emergency medicine).
  2. Holds approved postgraduate qualifications relevant to the specialty or such other qualifications or experience deemed appropriate. Completed or willingness to undertake NSW Health Education Centre Against Violence Graduate Certificate in the Medical and Forensic Management of Adult Sexual Assault.
  3. Demonstrated clinical leadership skills, including staff supervision and mentoring and an ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in nursing practice. Participation and/ or leadership roles in state-wide or specialty-wide clinical practice and/ or leadership in clinical practice at a service level and/ or district level an advantage.
  4. Demonstrated ability to apply expert clinical knowledge to provide safe, high quality, trauma-informed care that is culturally responsive and to be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team and an ability to take part in 24/7 on call crisis roster.
