Located on Gadigal and Bidjigal land (Randwick NSW), Black Dog Institute is the only Medical Research Institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the lifespan, our aim is to create a mentally healthier world for everyone. Desired Skills and Experience
The Role
The Clinical Research Lead is part of the clinic management team, alongside the Practice Manager and Clinical Lead, who collectively ensure the overall smooth running of the clinics in compliance and accordance with the policies, procedures, and values of the Black Dog Institute. The Clinical Research Lead is a joint clinical and academic position and the purpose of the role is to oversee and coordinate the various research programs operating within the Black Dog Institute's Clinical Services. The Clinical Research Lead will work together with the Head of Clinical Research to develop a program of Clinical Research focused on the assessment and treatment of adult mood disorders.
In addition to developing a program of research, the role also involves undertaking patient assessments and ongoing psychological interventions within Institute's Clinic.
The role is 0.8 FTE, and up to 0.2FTE will be spent engaged in clinical activities. The role will enjoy a conjoint academic appointment with UNSW Sydney (subject to conferral by the University).
Duties & Responsibilities
1 Academic
  • Design, develop and lead a program of research focused on the management, assessment and treatment of adult mood and anxiety disorders.
  • Working with the Head of Clinical Research, coordinate the program of research being conducted within the Black Dog Institute Clinical Services.
  • Ensure adequate and appropriate governance and ethics within research projects being conducted within the Black Dog Institute Clinical Services.
  • Prepare manuscripts and other research reports.
  • Undertake analysis of data collected in the clinic and research projects.
  • Assist in the preparation of ethics applications.
  • Work collaboratively with other research teams within the Black Dog Institute and partner organisations.
  • Prepare grant applications to attract research funding.
2 Clinical
  • Provide advanced level Psychology services including a range of individualised and group clinical care based on professional training reflecting current ethical clinical practice as required.
  • Provide comprehensive assessment and care planning monitoring client/patient progress adjusting treatment accordingly for complex management.
  • Liaise with multi-disciplinary team to promote effective communication including verbal and written feedback to referring Doctor as required.
  • Familiar and comply with legal, ethical responsibilities to patients/clients, visitors and staff, inclusive of maintaining confidentiality.
  • Maintain appropriate clinical records reflecting adherence to Black Dog Institute policies, ACHS and legal requirements.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of programs relevant to the needs of clients and current clinical practice.
3 Supervisor Responsibilities
  • Maintain a sound working knowledge of best practice supervision practices; competency-based learning plans and ethics around supervision.
  • Provide supervision and mentoring to members of the clinic research team including students, and staff (eg research assistants and postdoctoral research staff).
4 Professional Leadership and collaboration
  • Work in collaboration with the Clinic Manager and Head of Clinical Services to ensure high-quality service and operation of the Clinical Services at Black Dog Institute
  • Initiate, implement and evaluate research. Promote research via publication or presentation at internal and external forums. Integrate knowledge from higher-level studies into the development and implementation of practice and program initiatives.
  • Represent the profession either clinically or in relation to service development as required.
  • Liaise with other BDI teams in a consultative role regarding the development of website and publicity materials; represent the BDI in media activities; provide support to research projects which require clinical psychology input.
  • Participate as a valued team member promoting and contributing to a supportive team environment.
  • Collaborate effectively and maintain strong relationships with relevant researchers within the Institute and UNSW 5 Professional Development
  • Participate regularly in clinical supervision and continues ongoing professional development through education.
  • Accept responsibility for maintaining and strengthening own professional knowledge and expertise. Maintenance of own continuing professional development portfolio as required.
Selection Criteria
1. Tertiary Qualification of Psychology with Registration as a Psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia (AHPRA)
2. A PhD in the area of mental health research or related field
3. A proven track record of research publications in a relevant area or field and relevant research experience in leading Clinical Research projects
4. In depth knowledge and experience conducting Clinical Research in an applied setting
5. In depth knowledge and clinical experience in the use of a variety of contemporary psychotherapeutic techniques e.g. experience providing individual therapy and running groups using CBT, DBT, Schema-Focused Therapy and/or ACT modalities
6. Proven experience in research supervision of students and staff.
7. Experience in the use of evidence based, best practice treatments for both short term and longer term, time limited therapy
8. Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to engage in an inclusive, respectful and productive manner with stakeholders of all levels
9. A knowledge of EEO principles and OH&S responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant OH&S training
