We are looking for a highly motivated, experienced person to fill the role of Communications and Digital Advisor in the Office of the Hon. John Graham MLC, Special Minister of State, Minister for Roads Minister for the Arts, Minister for Music and the Night-time Economy, Minister for Jobs and Tourism, Deputy Leader of the NSW Government in the Legislative Council.
About the Minister:The Hon. John Graham MLC was elected to the NSW Parliament in 2016, as a member of the Legislative Council. In his ministerial roles he is working to implement NSW Government priorities across the State.
In the arts, music, night-time economy and tourism portfolios, the office works at the intersection of culture, technology and entrepreneurship. The Minister is committed to supporting vibrant and inclusive cultural industries, bringing back the buzz to nightlife, and the creative economy.
As roads Minister he is committed to ensuring Sydney drivers have a fair, equitable, safe and reliable road network. He is driving toll reform, implementing new measures to improve safety on our roads and delivering significant infrastructure commitments to support the State’s growth.
As Special Minister of State, John Graham is working to lift standards of governance across government.
About the role:The role plays a pivotal role in the media team, and will suit someone who has:
a strong news sense and is passionate the ability of clear communication to foster public change;
versatility to shift between different portfolio areas;
appreciation of the impact of both traditional and Digital media; and
interest in working in a fast-paced environment.
The role is responsible for developing digital content for the Minister’s social media channels as well as responses to media issues, inquiries, and opportunities in consultation with the Ministerial policy and departmental media teams, including preparation of media statements, alerts, strategies, and releases in a highly effective and timely manner.
The role plays an essential role in delivering integrated communication that targets a wide variety of audiences through mainstream media, niche publications and social media.
The role ensures the Minister has a clear, active and engaging social media presence, and work with the Director and Deputy Director of Media to coordinate media responses across all portfolios.
Functions of the role:Media management (50%)
This role develops and delivers written media materials, supports the planning and delivery of media events and opportunities and provides media advice to support Ministerial media opportunities across multiple channels.
This requires:
- Supporting and preparing the Minister with media advice and messaging.
- Sharing weekend on-call duties (rostered) as one of three on-call spokespeople including daily media monitoring (traditional and social).
- The capacity to build strong and effective working relationships with media, government, and stakeholders.
Social media (50%)
This role drives and develops the Minister’s social presence. This requires the capacity to work with advisors across the office, and department staff, to create timely, effective and engaging social content across all portfolios.
About you:- You will be a self-starter with an understanding of the media cycle, recognise and love a great story, and enjoy creating effective written and Digital content to connect with broad audiences.
- You have a strong understanding of the Australian media landscape.
- You have a keen interest in and sound knowledge of current and emerging public policy issues (or ability to rapidly acquire). A strong knowledge of the arts, culture and creative industries, or Roads, would be beneficial.
- You have strong analytical skills and the demonstrated capacity to comprehend complex issues, think strategically and adapt to changing circumstances.
- You have experience in successfully creating and executing compelling content tailored to various social media platforms.
- You possess strong communication skills and capacity to respond to media enquiries and identify media opportunities.
- You have exceptional writing skills with the ability to develop compelling content, including media releases, Q&As, talking points, and social content.
- Your ability to show initiative and work under minimal supervision and under pressure is essential.
- A natural high performer, you have excellent project management skills
- You have the proven capacity to deal with conflicting priorities and competing stakeholder expectations.
- You are able to deliver to deadlines, identify, plan and execute proactive media opportunities and have exceptional issue and crisis management skills.
- You are flexible, agile and have some availability to attend some after-hours and work on weekends as required (on a roster.)
