The Communications Officer is a key member of the UMSU team, providing promotional support and expertise to UMSU’s staff and elected student representatives. This position is responsible for the development and implementation of marketing and communications strategies that endeavour to engage students with their student union, its various departments and its services. This role reports to the Coordinator, Communications and Marketing.
You will obtain experience in:
- Safe management of a highly visible brand;
- Community management;
- Contributing to integrated marketing campaigns;
- Creating original content for use online and in print;
- Crisis management;
- Copyright and legal matters relating to communications;
- Measuring and reporting on communications plans.
Core Responsibilities:
- Communications and marketing plans
- Copy writing for publications, both print and digital
- Media relations
- Social media management and publishing
- Promotional support for events
- Research and analysis.
Your Expertise (Need to Have)
- Demonstrated knowledge and computer literacy; social media platforms, image editing (Adobe, Social Media editing software, etc.), website management, databases and spreadsheets, word processing and email/calendar software.
- Demonstrated knowledge of leveraging new media and digital technologies to supplement traditional communication methods, to drive increased student awareness, understanding and engagement.
- Proven ability to simplify intricate information to make it accessible to students across various platforms such as eNewsletters, socials and website.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to engage and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders.
- Proven ability to work in a team environment and achieve team outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines.
- A valid employee Working with Children Check (WWCC).
Bonus Points (Nice to Have)
- Tertiary qualifications or experience in the higher education sector and/or in student, community and/or membership based organisations;
- Website content management system knowledge; and
- Understanding of, and commitment to, principles of student unionism.

What’s on Offer
This is a full time ongoing role (38 hours per week), position with a starting base salary of $82,108.79 plus 12% superannuation.
