The Opportunity
As a Community Laws Officer, you’ll ensure the peace, order, safety and amenity of the Shire by providing both the community and internal Council employees with guidance and information to ensure they are compliant with relevant acts, regulations and local laws. You’ll investigate complaints and develop solutions using mediation, negotiation and enforcement action when required.

You’ll take on:

  • Assessing and making recommendations in respect to applications made to Council under the relevant provisions of the General Local Law
  • Patrolling designated parking areas to ensure good traffic flow and issuing parking infringement notices where breaches of legislation are identified
  • Completing and actioning appropriate notices, infringements and legal documentation as required
  • Advising, assisting and making recommendations on fire prevention and related matters
  • Participating in animal control functions including responding to complaints and emergency situations

This is a full time, ongoing position and is based primarily in Orbost with travel to Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance and across East Gippsland as required. You’ll also join an on-call roster responding after normal business hours and on weekends to calls of an urgent nature.

Things You’re Proud Of (Key Selection Criteria)

  • A relevant qualification and experience in Law Enforcement or a preparedness to undertake training pertinent to the role.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to utilise information technology applicable to the role.
  • Excellent customer service skills, conflict/dispute resolution and negotiating skills
  • A current, valid Victorian driver’s licence.
If successful, you will need to undertake a police check, pre-employment medical check and hold a current Working With Children Check. You must also be legally entitled to work in Australia.
