Job description

  • Progressive pastoral model to deliver high-quality sheep and lambs.
  • This property has exceptional livestock handling infrastructure.
  • An attractive remuneration package with comfortable accommodation is on offer.
The Property & Employer:

Our client's operation is a privately owned and professionally managed pastoral enterprise primarily focused on sheep production. Nestled on the iconic Riverina Plains, northwest of Conargo, New South Wales, the property spans 42,000 hectares in the heart of renowned 'Merino' territory. Their business's core is merino stud and commercial sheep breeding, where they employ a progressive pastoral model. This approach allows them to produce high-quality sheep and lambs, with a genetic focus on developing plain-bodied, highly fertile, and robust ewes. Ethical standards in sheep production remain a continuous priority.
The property comprises 14,000 ewes, including 8,000 Self Replacing Merinos, 5,500 terminals, and 500 registered ewes.  They also engage in opportunity feedlot lamb operations and seasonal cattle backgrounding, adding diversity to their agricultural activities. The property boasts exceptional livestock handling infrastructure, ensuring the animals' welfare and the operations' efficiency.
The Role:

Our clients seek an energetic and reliable Livestock Overseer to join their vibrant team. This role is tailor-made for an individual with a self-motivated attitude and a deep passion for the sheep industry. You will have the unique opportunity to contribute significantly to a progressive pastoral operation, working closely with the Farm Manager. Together, you will ensure that the day-to-day operations and animal husbandry activities are executed flawlessly, leading to smooth operations and optimal productivity.
The responsibilities of this role are diverse and engaging. They range from overseeing stock movements and handling to assessing feed quality and overseeing recovery processes. You will also play a key role in engaging and liaising with contractors for shearing, crutching, lamb marking, and mustering, ensuring that all activities align with their standards. Management of junior staff, delegating daily tasks, and implementing on-farm improvements such as fencing and water management will also fall under your purview. Furthermore, you will be responsible for meticulous record-keeping, implementing breeding and marketing objectives such as joining, scanning, weaning, weighing, and classing, and adhering to safe work policies and procedures. If you want to significantly impact the sheep industry within a role that offers both challenges and rewards, we encourage you to apply.

The Offer:

A generous remuneration package will be offered based on experience and will include a base wage plus super, comfortable three-bedroom cottage, electricity, phone/iPad/internet, and a station meat allowance.
Located 35km from Conargo NSW (home of the famous Conargo Pub). Conargo provides a primary school and regular social gatherings. 85km from both larger centres of Deniliquin and Hay, which provide a larger variety of services and numerous sporting/social clubs with a range of recreational activities.
The Ideal Candidate:

This role will utilise your existing farming and livestock experience along with the following attributes:
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in sheep handling and animal welfare, with pastoral experience being highly regarded.
  • Own working dogs or willingness to obtain,
  • Strong communication skills with the capability to give direction and teach junior employees, along with the ability to work autonomously.
  • High-level record-keeping skills, proficient in maintaining records on agricultural platforms (e.g., Agriwebb).
  • Willingness to learn, gain new skills and experiences for career development and participate in further training and development as or if required.
  • Experience in all aspects of general farm maintenance, including fencing and basic machinery operation.
  • Demonstrated high-level Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) standards and animal welfare principles.
