The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity exists for a Heritage (Archaeology) consultant to join Urbis's Perth based heritage team. This role is a minimum 12 month full time parental leave cover with a view to becoming a permanent full time role.  You will work under the supervision of the Associate Director of Archaeology to deliver field work and research in relation to Aboriginal cultural heritage and Archaeology.  You will also assist the broader team by undertaking historic research for built and intangible heritage projects, including report writing.

 You will be: 

  • Undertaking historic and cultural research to obtain information and knowledge to establish a thorough understanding of heritage places and new communities;
  • Undertaking field work under supervision of senior staff members which includes Aboriginal cultural heritage surveys and excavations;
  • Supporting the preparation of advice and developing skills in technical report writing;
  • Developing your knowledge in understanding and ability to apply statutory heritage legislation, principles and the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972, Heritage Act, 2018 and advise on projects in accordance with the applicable legislation;
  • Collating and analysing data for desk top archaeological and aboriginal due diligence assessments and assisting the team to deliver advice to clients;
  • Using appropriate tools such as GIS, internal software and Microsoft Office to extract, analyse and develop advice for clients
  • Assisting in the preparation of presentations, drafting client reports and incorporating client feedback into final reports for senior team members;

  About You: 

  • Tertiary qualifications in Archaeology, Cultural Heritage Management, Anthropology and/or History.
  • Some awareness and experience in preparing Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Survey Reports, Archaeological Management Plans and Strategies, Aboriginal Heritage Due Diligence Assessments and Cultural Heritage Management Plans is desirable
  • Able to undertake fieldwork which requires you to be fit and able to walk and may occasionally include overnight travel
  • Some experience of working with Aboriginal communities is highly desirable
  • Some experience of working in the heritage industry is highly desirable
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite (including but not limited to Word, PowerPoint and Excel)
  • Ability to undertake historic research for multiple projects in a structured and organised way with attention to detail an essential requirement
