Position Overview:

As the Coordinator of Community Safety & Local Laws, you will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring programs and initiatives related to Community Safety, Local Laws compliance, and regulatory enforcement through proactive initiatives that positively contribute to overall community wellbeing within the Maranoa region.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement Community Safety strategies and programs.
  • Coordinate and oversee the enforcement of Local Laws and regulations.
  • Coordinate regular inspections and patrols to identify hazards and compliance issues.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to promote safety initiatives.
  • Provide advice and guidance on legal matters to Council staff, the community, and businesses.
  • Investigate complaints and non-compliance matters related to Community Safety and Local Laws.
  • Prepare reports, statistics, and documentation for management and regulatory purposes.
  • Stay informed about legislative changes and industry trends in Community Safety and Local Laws enforcement.
  • Actively ensure compliance with Council's Local Laws, Animal Management (Cats & Dogs) Act 2008, and other relevant legislation.
  • Provide recommendations for compliance with Council's ongoing operations and assist with policy development.
  • Maintain accurate electronic records of customer requests, investigations and enforcement actions.
  • Coordinate proactive patrols to educate the public on legal requirements and take enforcement action as needed.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to promote awareness of relevant legislation and provide specialist advice.
  • Prepare draft correspondence for senior leadership and undertake other duties as directed by management.
  • Conduct factual investigations and gather evidence, including an ability to exercise judgement in applying legislation based on risk management principles.
  • Apply highly developed communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate persuasively, engage in active listening, consult with a wide range of people at all levels of the community, manage conflict, foster collaboration, cooperation to facilitate positive outcomes.
  • Effective time management skills to ensure legislative and other timeframes are adhered to.
  • Participate in an on-call roster system to respond to compliance and Local law issues outside of normal business hours including weekends and public holidays.
  • Effectively and efficiently coordinate a multi-disciplinary team and provide mentoring, coaching and continuous learning on relevant compliance, enforcement and investigation matters.
  • Provide leadership to the team to ensure that psycho-social well-being of team members is being monitored and support staff in this diverse environment, as part of Councils WHS requirements.

Qualifications and Licences:

  • Current C (Car) Class Driver Licence.
  • Degree with substantial experience or equivalent qualifications and experience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to foster positive relationships.
  • Effective organisational abilities and the capability to manage priorities under tight deadlines.
  • Exceptional discretion and ability to handle sensitive information confidentially.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Ability to work independently, adapt to changes, and maintain professionalism.
  • Previous experience in local government or a similar role is advantageous but not mandatory.
