About the Digital Office
The Digital Office (DO) is a newly created business unit at CSIRO with a purpose is to drive CSIRO’s digital and data capabilities to maximise CSIRO’s impact and value. The DO is responsible for developing a data strategy that outlines the future of data across science and enterprise services, as well as developing an organisation-wide Data Governance framework. A data maturity assessment is currently underway to baseline CSIRO’s enterprise data maturity and identify a roadmap of improvements.
About the role
As the Data Governance Lead, you will be responsible for leading the development of CSIRO’s organisation-wide Data Governance framework, driving the organisation’s Data Governance capability. They will shape CSIRO’s data-driven future by ensuring the effective management and utilisation of data assets, safeguarding data integrity by putting practices in place which improve data quality, and supporting CSIRO to become a more insight-driven organisation that leverages the power of data.
A strong ability to build trust, influence diverse stakeholders, and negotiate complex scenarios will be key to success. As CSIRO's Data Governance Leader, you will champion transparency, open communication, and inclusive decision-making, strengthening our reputation as a reliable, responsive, and innovative partner.
Your duties will include:
- Supporting the development of a CSIRO-wide data strategy and the implementation of a roadmap of improvements which will uplift data maturity.
- Monitoring industry trends and advancements in data strategy and governance and recommending improvements to enhance data practices and capabilities.
- Developing a CSIRO-wide Data Governance framework in consultation with key stakeholders.
- Establishing supporting policies, procedures, and guidelines which operationalise the Data Governance framework.
- Working closely with key stakeholders to implement the governance framework.
- Providing guidance, coaching and support to data stewards, owners, and custodians in adherence to Data Governance policies and procedures.
- Establishing and coordinating CSIRO’s governance forums to facilitate effective cross-functional decision-making and oversight of Data Governance activities.
- Being an active member of the federal governance Data Governance network, representing CSIRO’s interests and building relationships with data professionals across the public sector.
- Defining and reporting on key metrics which measure the effectiveness and maturity of data strategy and governance initiatives.
- Managing regular assessments of the organisations data maturity to track uplift against baseline.
- Being a visible leader who drives data initiatives and fosters a culture of data literacy and ownership throughout the organisation.
- Working closely with Legal, Risk, and Governance teams to identify applicable legislation, regulations, industry standards, or obligations and implementing solutions.
- Introducing new perspectives/directions to address long-standing organisation-wide problems.

Salary: AU$146,207 - AU$161,767 per annum plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:
Essential
- Demonstrated experience (5+ years) in developing and implementing a Data Governance framework in a complex organisation.
- Familiarity with federal and state data-related regulations and legislation and their implications on Data Governance.
- Proficiency in data management practices, including data quality, data architecture, metadata management, and data lifecycle management.
- Experience in developing and implementing data policies, procedures, and standards.
- Knowledge of Data Governance technologies and tools (e.g., data cataloguing, data lineage, Data Governance platforms).
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to negotiate, collaborate, influence and generate buy-in for change cross-functionally and at senior levels of the organisation, and a record of strong leadership that has contributed to or defined policy direction and strategy.
- Ability to foster a data-driven culture and promote Data Governance awareness within the organisation.
- Tertiary qualification (or equivalent industry experience) in computer science, information management, Data Governance, or a related field.
Desirable
- Experience developing and implementing organisational-wide Data Governance initiatives in an Australian Government or research context.
- Industry recognised certification (e.g. CDMP).
