Derrimut Weelam Gathering Place Program Officer  

To perform this role it is essential that the person is a male Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. It is therefore a genuine occupational requirement under Section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991.

About us  

The City of Kingston is south-east of Melbourne and is approximately 20km from Melbourne's CBD. We employ over 1,450 people in a diverse range of roles including engineering, customer service, administration, finance, family, youth and children's services, sport and recreation, health, parks and gardens, planning, arts and management. 

  • The Inclusive Communities Department engages across the Kingston community providing services, partnership and strategic leadership to residents, community groups, clubs and organisations. 
  • The Community Diversity and Inclusion team sits within the Inclusive Communities Department and is responsible for delivering actions to improve the wellbeing of the community, in particular Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, multicultural and 55+ community members, as well as supporting the Derrimut Weelam Gathering Place.  
  • Derrimut Weelam Gathering Place (located at 199 Bay Trail Road, Mordialloc) was formally established in 2017 to provide a culturally safe space for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to gather and connect to each other and local culture. The Gathering Place provides a space for community-led cultural events, programs and activities to enhance cultural identity, social inclusion and community health and wellbeing.

The role

We are seeking a DWGP Program Officer to join the Diversity & Inclusion team. Reporting to Selina Dronryp, your role is to:

  • Support the growth of the Derrimut Weelam Gathering Place by strengthening links with the local Aboriginal community.
  • Coordinate and facilitate the delivery of community activities and programs at the DWGP.
  • Engage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and organisations via referral, or through assertive outreach, providing them with proactive, practical support and advice to encourage and assist them to use the DWGP.
  • Work in partnership with the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and other potential users to assess their needs and develop plans of program delivery which acknowledge abilities, strengths and desires within available resources.
  • Promote and market the DWGP and its activities to the local community and potential users.

About you

 We are looking for someone with:

  • Knowledge and experience in working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations and community
  • Previous experience working with a Gathering Place will be highly regarded
  • Tertiary qualifications in Community Services and Social work will be highly regarded.
  • Experience in the management of projects, events and community consultation highly regarded

The salary for this position starts at $76,900.98 (Band 5) per annum plus superannuation.
