What is a Diesel Mechanic (Heavy Vehicle Mechanic)?
A Diesel Mechanic also known as a Heavy Vehicle Mechanic, will maintain, test and repair diesel motors and the mechanical parts of trucks, buses and other heavy vehicles such as transmissions, suspension, steering and brakes.
About the Apprenticeship
- Undertake a 4 Year Apprenticeship and obtain a Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology
- Detect and diagnose faults in engines and parts for diesel vehicles including trucks, buses and a range of other diesel vehicles
- Learn to dismantle and remove engine assemblies, transmissions, steering mechanisms and other components, and check parts
- Repair and replace worn and defective parts and reassemble mechanical components, and refer to service manuals as needed
- Reassemble engines and parts after being repaired
- Test and adjust mechanical parts after being repaired, diagnose and test parts with the assistance of computers
- Repair and maintain hydraulic components of diesel engines that are used to power attachments such as hoists, booms, buckets and scrapers
- Learn how to oxy-acetylene, TIG and MIG weld, to replace or repair faulty parts in diesel engines
- Work and earn a wage at a supportive Host Employer (the MTA will find you a suitable Host Employer)
- Attend automotive training at a state-of-the-art training centre
- Once qualified you will have a nationally recognised qualification
Training is a combination of in person, online and in the workplace.
About you
Essential:
- An Australian citizen / or Permanent Resident
- Currently living in South Australia
- 16 years of age or older
- In Year 11 or higher
- Willing to commit to a 4-year apprenticeship (completely paid for by the MTA)
- Driver's Licence- full-time apprentices must have Ps & school-based apprentices must have Ls
- Passionate about automotive
- Positive attitude
Desirable, but NOT essential:
- Have completed a Certificate I or II in Automotive
- Have work experience in the automotive industry or metal fabrication workplace
