About the role

Reporting functionally to the Head of Markets, Australia & New Zealand and directly to the Global Head of In Control & Regions, you will ensure the adoption and implementation of the Risk Control Framework (RCF) by the management of the Regional and Global Markets Business Lines. It facilitates the incorporation of all aspects of the risk management framework (including Compliance Risk) into the day-to-day activities of the Regional and Global Markets Business Lines. Within the deployment of that framework, the Markets AU/NZ Business is able to focus on its operational set up and performance regarding the risks that arise from its activities, how it may organise to maximise performance and mitigate Risk and the controls in place to ensure a robust delivery platform.

This role operates independently on a day-to-day basis however a collaborative working relationship with the broader regional Wholesale Banking Non-Financial Risk and Control team is a compulsory requirement to ensure all operational Risk and compliance matters for Markets AU/NZ are fully aligned within the Region and globally

In this role you will be working directly with the subject matter expert on the unit(s), regarding risk control activities (RCAs) within the unit(s) and specifically addressing areas such as processes being fit for purpose and operational/compliance/IT/Information Security/Business Continuity Management and regulatory risk etc. as may arise in that unit.

The role is a position of influence and responsibility within the 1st line of responsibility in supporting the adoption of a strong performance and risk culture.

Some of the key responsibilities and accountabilities of this role are to:

  • Assist risk (& control) owners to identify and manage operational aspects of the unit (provide knowledge, experience, and capacity) by facilitating / supporting the performance of risk identification, assessment, and mitigation activities.
  • Review Markets AU/NZ risk control activities and incidents/risks in ARCHER to ensure alignment with requirements and accuracy.
  • Improve Markets AU/NZ operational risk awareness / maturity by providing training, knowledge, and experience.
  • Support risk owners (predominantly the Head of Markets AU & NZ) to perform risk response by proactive business management to understand their control environment and facilitate risk owners to work with control owners to define, design and implement controls.
  • Monitor and report on risks and the continuous execution of the controls by use of Key Risk Indicators and Key Control Indicators.
  • Report and assist registration of operational risks incidents and support execution of lessons learned where areas are found for operational improvements.
  • Facilitate attestation and In Control Sign off by risk (& control) owners (again, predominantly the Head of Markets AU & NZ) to demonstrate compliance with applicable (global) regulations and providing attestation where required.
  • Support and monitor execution of actions by adequately following up with concrete actions if deficiencies are identified in the RCAs and / or if risks are not within the approved risk appetite.
  • Support business line management and staff to incorporate and implement the requirements of the Risk Management Framework into day-to-day business activities.
  • Liaise, coordinate and work with the 2nd line Risk Management functions and 3rd line Risk Management function (Internal Audit) to effectively implement all aspects of the Risk Management Framework within the 1st line.
  • Ensure new initiatives appropriately, and adequately address operational performance times and drive the appropriate level of engagement with key stakeholders (i.e., Security, BCM, Compliance, Legal and Operational Risk) on key change matters affecting the Division.


To be successful in the role, you will have:

  • University Graduate in finance, accounting, business, economics, law, or other banking related discipline 
  • Strong and proven experience within the banking industry, preferably financial markets
  • In depth knowledge of relevant financial products, and technical competence in given areas of expertise.
  • An in-depth understanding of Non-Financial Risk Management within the financial services industry and related regulatory standards.
  • A knowledge of causes, influences and drivers of operational risk.
  • Experience in managing risk, evaluating risk, and reviewing risk.
  • Experience managing stakeholders and have experience dealing with senior management and business and commercial teams.
  • Experience in communicating and managing change including delivering training to staff on risk management.
