Job description

Not all heroes wear capes - but plenty of them use toilet paper

Want to challenge yourself at a high-growth startup AND make a difference in the world? Come join the revolootion!

Funny name, serious business

We make eco-friendly products and donate 50% of our profits to provide clean water and help build toilets for the billions of people who lack proper access. So far, we've contributed over $11.22 million AUD (roughly $7.5 million USD) to fund sanitation projects around the globe. Basically, we're really good at doing good.

With hubs in Australia, the Philippines, China, the US, UK and Europe, our amazing team of 200+ work to make the biggest possible impact for people and the planet. Over the next couple of years, we're hoping to increase our annual donation tenfold to get us closer to our dream of everyone in the world having access to clean water and sanitation services.

A bit about the role

We're rapidly growing our Digital Product in-house team and on the hunt for an Australian-based Director of Engineering, Digital Product to join our merry band! Reporting into our AU-based Head of Digital Product, you will lead an international team of engineers based in the US and Australia. In this role, you will provide engineering leadership, project leadership, business leadership and engineering process ownership for your team. You will provide and assign the appropriate engineering resources on projects, manage the performance of your direct reports, maintain and improve engineering processes and ensure project milestones are met.

Working closely with the Product, Design, and Engineering teams, you'll help form long term technical solutions for our front end stack and design system. You'll be supporting multiple feature teams in mentoring engineers, reviewing technical proposals and building best practices. Through effective people management and a strategic foundational building leadership style, you'll ensure we deliver a seamless and best-in-class digital experience that works beautifully for our customers and our business.

While we're hiring this role for our Melbourne hub, we still want to hear from you if you're located in Australia, US, UK, China, Hong Kong, or the Philippines and up for dedicating yourself to the AEDT timezone from afar. Our Digital Product team spans across the US and Australia and works mostly remote-first (we have global co-working spaces in LA, NY, Melbourne, Sydney, and London that you are welcome to use, and also offer a stipend for hot desks and a slick WFH setup). And while we're not totally immune to the effects of time zones challenging how we come together, we've done plenty of testing on our ways of working and currently have our Digital Product team committing up to 4 hours per day of collaboration time which sees our US team aligning to PST afternoons and our Australian team diving into earlier mornings. We also believe in Slow (no-meetings) Mondays for our Australian team, which our US team enthusiastically celebrates on their respective Fridays.

If you worked here this past month here are some things you might have been involved in

  • Guided and advised on the critical phases of our Headless programme to separate our current Shopify hosted front ends
  • Collaborated with the Head of Digital, and Directors of Product mgt/ Product design to initiate the development of the 5 yr Digital Strategy.
  • Supported the wider Digital Product team develop the upcoming quarterly roadmap
  • Sponsored the promotion of 3 members of the engineering team who's development you'd fostered in the prior year.
  • Initiated the engagement of our AU hub aligned agency partners to support our team capacity flex.

Let's talk about you

You're a people leader and natural roll model (pun intended)

You care deeply about the people you work with, and it shows. You're known to lead by example and promote an environment of experimentation and a thirst for learning. You're continually levelling yourself and your team up by harnessing excellent habits, keeping communication and inspiration flowing, going after goals big and small, supporting each other, holding each other accountable, and celebrating the wins together.

You're comfortable leading digital strategy

You're the visionary behind our digital technology strategy, steering the ship towards innovative horizons. You're not just tech-savvy; you're a digital pioneer. You dive into the latest trends and emerging technologies, deciphering which ones will catapult us forward. You're not afraid to experiment, pushing boundaries to uncover new possibilities.

You champion a culture of continuous learning, inspiring your team to explore, adapt, and excel. You're a natural leader, setting an example with your passion for progress. You understand that technology is a dynamic landscape, and you thrive on keeping us at the forefront.

You eat fullstack for breakfast

Mmmm, fullstack. You know the latest in front end frameworks and know how to decide what cloud services we should be using to host and to scale our experience. You definitely have strong experience with one or more ecommerce platforms (ideally Shopify but let's still talk if it's Magento or something else), and you understand and can assess the trade-offs of custom vs. out of the box approaches.

Know how to streamline Delivery Pipeline Optimization

You're the architect of efficiency, refining product delivery processes and ensuring seamless coordination across squads and programs. Your meticulous approach to documentation and scope decisions lays the foundation for successful initiatives. As a mentor and guide, you empower the team in the development and maintenance of initiative documentation.

You are an expert collaborator

Your work touches every part of the business - both within and beyond! - and you are highly collaborative across all teams, hubs, and levels of Who Gives A Crap. You encourage open communication and advocate for shared positive outcomes. People trust you and you're able to build a reputation as an expert as well as a teammate. You're able to clearly define a value proposition and seamlessly articulate it, generating support and buy-in from both key stakeholders and team members.

You give a crap

Do you want your work to make the world a better place? Do you want to work with other people who feel the same way? What a coincidence - us too!

Why should you work with us?

First off, as a certified B Corp, we work to make a difference every day while maintaining the highest standards of social and environmental impact. With our most recent score of 125.5 we're in very good company with other exceptional B Corps around the world.

We also believe that helping to make the world a better place should be rewarded accordingly - that's why we offer competitive, market informed salaries, meaningful support towards healthcare for our team around the world, generous paid leave, tailored learning and development opportunities, and free toilet paper (yes, you read that right).

Our engagement surveys (thanks Culture Amp!) tell us that our team is really proud (98%) to work for Who Gives A Crap and, well, we couldn't be more proud of that.

Have you made it this far?

If you're still reading, we think there's a strong chance you might be our kind of person. Here's the thing, though - research suggests that 60% of women and underrepresented folks might have already talked themselves out of applying. Even if you don't check every box above, we want to encourage you to introduce yourself. We believe a diversity of perspectives and experiences makes a team stronger - and the stronger our team, the closer we are to delivering toilets and clean water for all.
