About Us
The Aboriginal Justice Group of the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS) is committed to driving systemic change in the justice system, to deliver better outcomes for Aboriginal Victorians. The group works in partnership with Victorian Aboriginal communities and is guided by principles of Aboriginal self-determination.
The Stolen Generations Reparations Unit sits within the Aboriginal Justice Group and was established in January 2022 to deliver the Stolen Generations Reparations Package (the Reparations Package) in Victoria. The team is committed to delivering a reparations process that is fully supported, accessible, transparent and trauma informed.
About the Role
Reporting to the Executive Director, Aboriginal Partnerships and Programs, the Director will be responsible for leading the new multi-disciplinary Stolen Generations Reparations Unit, which will implement and administer the Reparations Package. The Director will establish and maintain the project's governance, project management stakeholder engagement, resourcing and planning documentation and structures to ensure the Reparations Package aligns with best practice, including cultural safety, and is delivered on time and to budget.
The Director will require a combination of project and policy expertise, a strong understanding of government and decision making, effective stakeholder management, and ability to effectively brief senior executives, the Secretary and DJCS Ministers,.
As the Director, you will have an in depth understanding of the principles of cultural safety, working with participants who have lived experience of trauma, and the gravity of this reform for impacted Aboriginal Victorians.
About you
  • Proven leadership, management experience to deliver effective staff performance.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Victorian Government's commitment to Aboriginal self-determination and ability to identify and deliver measurable outcomes that align with the overarching Aboriginal self-determination agenda.
  • Demonstrated expertise in managing complex projects, managing large budgets, and undertaking required reporting, within government.
  • Track record in delivering reform projects or redress schemes on time and to budget.
  • Excellent knowledge of Aboriginal culture and society and understanding of historical and contemporary issues facing Stolen Generations and Aboriginal Victorians.
  • Strong relationships within the Victorian Aboriginal Community and demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with key stakeholder groups in a leadership role.
  • Lead a positive work environment which promotes a partnership approach to people management, enhances morale and respects diversity.
