This is a twelve (12) month fixed term, full-time position commencing Term 3, 2024 with possible extension and/or permanency

Busselton Senior High School (SHS) is seeking an innovative and motivated Education Assistant – Auslan to join our team.

The Education Assistant – Auslan will assist with the communicative needs of Deaf or Hard of Hearing students using Auslan or another sign language or sign system, relevant to the child’s mode of communication.

The successful applicant will assist teachers in delivering planned education programs, encouraging a supportive and inclusive learning environment. Under teacher direction the successful applicant will assist in the implementation of specialised education programs and assist in the delivery of specific Individual Education Programs of Deaf or Hard of Hearing students. As required, you will provide feedback on education and therapy programs, and participate in the evaluation process relating to the achievement of goals.

As an Education Assistant - Auslan, you would be an Auslan interpreter in a range of secondary classroom settings, including mainstream subjects. You may also interpret events such as school camps, theatre performances and assemblies. Education Assistants provide support to the classroom, school, and community to ensure high quality learning programs are provided in an inclusive learning environment.

In addition, you will assist students to understand the education programs through teacher directed tutoring, such as assisting the student working on set tasks, clarifying instructions, supporting therapy, and personal and social goals. The successful applicant would be a part of a supportive and experienced team and will liaise with staff to advocate for students’ accessibility needs to provide the best possible learning outcomes.

The successful applicant will ideally have previous experience working as an Auslan interpreter, and possess competency in interpreting from English to Auslan, as well as Auslan to English. Having connection to, or involvement with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community would be highly regarded. The successful applicant would ideally work collaboratively in a team and build positive relationships with staff and students.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Well-developed oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with Deaf or Hard of Hearing students, liaise with parents, teachers and community members and where necessary assist teachers in understanding students.
  • Well-developed organisational skills, including the ability to contribute to a professional team and deliver an effective education program.
  • Knowledge and understanding of issues relevant to deaf or hard of hearing students.

Eligibility and training requirements

Employees will be required to:

  • Hold a Certificate, Diploma or Advanced Diploma of Auslan Interpreting (Paraprofessional/Professional) and/or NAATI Accreditation or have considerable proven experience as an Interpreter.
  • Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
  • Consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment.
  • Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
  • Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement.
  • Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter.
  • Complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement.
  • Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
