This is a ten (10) month fixed term, part-time (0.6FTE) position commencing Term 2, 2024 with possible extension and/or permanency
Kalamunda Secondary Education Support Centre (KSESC) is seeking to employ a highly motivated and proactive Education Assistant – Auslan.
As an Education Assistant – Auslan you would carry out activities within or outside the classroom to facilitate communication between Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, their peers, teachers and staff members. You would work with teaching staff in the delivery of their planned education programs to ensure that Deaf and Hard of Hearing students can access their learning programs, including meeting Individual Education Plan goals. Ideally the Education Assistant – Auslan would have experience working with students with disabilities.
Located in the Perth Hills, KSESC is a school for students with mild to severe intellectual disabilities. While this criterion is the primary base for enrolment students typically present with a broader range of disabilities including Autism Spectrum Disorders, psychological disorders and physical disabilities. Staff work collaboratively with parents and therapy providers within this complex environment to identify supportive structures to engage students in their learning. KSESC has partnerships with community groups in the local Kalamunda area which adds to the repertoire of programs that students can access.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
- Well developed oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with Deaf or Hard of Hearing students, liaise with parents, teachers and community members and where necessary assist teachers in understanding students.
- Well developed organisational skills, including the ability to contribute to a professional team and deliver an effective education program.
- Knowledge and understanding of issues relevant to deaf or hard of hearing students

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- hold a Certificate, Diploma or Advanced Diploma of Auslan Interpreting (Paraprofessional/Professional) and/or NAATI Accreditation or have considerable proven experience as an Interpreter
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment;
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
- complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.
