Job description

Small World Journeys is a Cairns-based Educational Tour operator with a heart of green. We run multi-day programs focusing on geography, biology, marine science, sustainability and community service.  We are professional, hardworking and we like to laugh. Small World has won both state and national tourism awards and we’ve had hundreds of happy student groups. We are now looking for contractor TOUR GUIDES for our programs for MAY - OCTOBER.  This role is perfect for guides who have other work, but are looking to fill in gaps.

Our Cairns region programs run year-round, but we are busiest during school holidays. At the moment we have work available from May to October with options beyond those months if you are keen.

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot employ people on a working holiday visa, as you must have a Queensland LR license for this role.

DESCRIPTION OF OUR IDEAL GUIDE:

  • Have a thorough knowledge of Cairns restaurants, shops and landmarks (we can’t engage anyone who is new to Cairns)
  • Enjoy working outdoors!  A typical trip might be accompanying the group to the reef one day, to the Daintree the next, learning about the environment, doing some community service projects or accompanying the group overnight on an Indigenous immersion experience.
  • Have demonstrable experience and success in working with groups of teenagers, and have the energy and enthusiasm to keep them interested in what you’re saying
  • Strong safety awareness and risk management skills
  • Typically work 1-2 days on a trip. Willingness to work very occasionally 5-9 days in a row on a Cairns-based trip is a bonus. We ask you weeks in advance what trips you'd like to guide, so you have plenty of notice if you are also employed elsewhere.
  • Have demonstrable experience in leading a multi-day camp or tour
  • Able to present positive aspects of Aboriginal culture and to discuss current Indigenous issues
  • Sustainability minded and willing to support our sustainability initiatives
  • Be in good physical condition
  • Indigenous applicants will have first preference
  • If you do not have a QLD Light Rigid license or higher, please do not apply.

You MUST:

  • Have aQueensland Driver’s Authority or can can obtain once with SWJ (this is an authority to be able to drive passengers commercially)
  • Appropriate license class (at least Light Rigid) to drive our tour bus
  • Have strong knowledge of Wet Tropics flora, fauna and natural history
  • Have been living in the Cairns region for at least 2 years
  • Have a current CPR and First Aid certificate or equivalent
  • Have a Queensland Blue Card (Suitability for Working with Children) – can obtain once with SWJ

TO EXPRESS YOUR INTEREST:

Even if you are only available for a few weeks, get in touch!

Please look at our website www.smallworldjourneys.com.au before applying so you know if this might be the right fit for you. If you do not have a Light Rigid license or higher, please do not apply.

No calls please, thanks.

We respond to every applicant. Please do us the courtesy of reading the MUST HAVES before applying.

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot employ people on a working holiday visa, as you must have a Queensland LR license for this role.

If you STILL apply after reading “if do not have an LR or higher, please do not apply” then seriously, really? You will then not get a response from us.
