We seek motivated, flexible team-oriented Assistant Directors with strategic policy, stakeholder engagement, and/or regulatory experience to lead one of our Airport Environment Officer (AEO) Network Hubs.
AEOs exercise regulatory functions under the Airports Act 1996 and the Airports (Environment Protection) Regulations 1997, monitor the implementation of Airport Environment Strategies, and liaise with airports and their tenants on environmental issues.
Hub Managers exercise AEO regulatory functions and also manage the resources and workload of an AEO Hub, while mentoring and supporting network staff and contributing to the overall strategic direction of the Environmental Regulation Section.

As an Assistant Director, you will have a demonstrated ability to:
- Supervise and manage a professional work unit and provide expert advice and assistance to team members performing technical or professional work;
- Utilise sound judgment, have the ability to solve complex issues and juggle competing priorities under time pressures to meet deadlines;
- Make timely decisions and provide strategic advice grounded in a consideration of the broader agency and government context;
- Maintain knowledge of relevant legislative and reporting requirements, Australian and International standards, quality assurance procedures and best practice models;
- Apply comprehensive work knowledge, and application of legislation, policy, procedures and guidelines to situations involving ambiguity, complexity, and sensitivity, and which require interpretation and analysis;
- Engage with risk, including the conduct of risk assessment and risk management activities;
- Communicate clearly and with influence, including strong written skills and an ability to concisely translate technical issues into a manner suitable to inform ministers, departmental executives and external stakeholders including the regulated community;
- Build and lead effective relationships with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders, including with industry and state and local governments, and across federal government;
- Adapt to change, demonstrate resilience and the ability to deal with ambiguity, complexity and change; and
- Build capability in a team environment through coaching others, providing performance feedback, conflict resolution and encouraging career development.
Qualifications, Training, Technical and Work Experience:
- Qualifications in Environmental Science or a similar environmental discipline.
- An awareness of, and familiarity with, relevant environment management practices in relation to air, water and soil pollution and excessive noise, including sound knowledge of environmental management practices, standards and guidelines, including sediment control, stockpiling, vegetation management, dust management, noise and contamination.
- Ability to assess and monitor environmentally technical operations, reports and correspondence.
- An understanding of, or experience in, the aviation industry, environmental assessment or state and local government planning and development frameworks, is desirable but not essential.
- Previous experience in a face to face regulatory role and an ability to develop expertise and subject-matter knowledge quickly will be highly valued.
