The Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) is an independent government agency which, in partnership with Basin governments, manages the Murray–Darling Basin’s water resources in the national interest. With the enactment of the Water Act 2007, the MDBA was established as an independent expertise-based statutory agency.
The MDBA aims to achieve a healthy working Basin for the benefit of all Australians. The Murray–Darling Basin contains a rich diversity of natural environments that are unique in Australia and the world. The Basin is also crucial to Australia’s economy and home to 2.3 million Australians, including people from over 40 First Nations. How we manage the Basin as a whole connected system, manage our water carefully, and protect it for future generations is set out in the .
The Position
The Director Sustainable Diversion Limit (SDL) Accounting is a rare opportunity for a motivated person with strong policy and analysis skills to lead work to implement SDLs across the Basin.
This team accounts for surface and groundwater use across the Basin each year relative to the SDLs set in the Basin Plan. It also includes accounting for how much water has been acquired and used for the environment year each year. The program undertakes analysis and technical studies in relation to the use of surface and groundwater to inform advice, strategy and policy development under the Basin Plan.
The SDL Accounting Director provides strategic leadership and drive for the team. The role works closely with other parts of the Basin Plan Portfolio and the Murray-Darling Basin Authority, as well as other agencies of the Australian Government, the Basin States and Territories and wider stakeholders.
Your key responsibilities in this role are to
  • Provide strategic leadership to the team and inspire a shared purpose and direction.
  • Be responsible for leading the team to:
  • implement the SDL accounting framework; and
  • improve understanding of water use across the Murray-Darling Basin (drawing on latest technological developments, methods and data);
  • Be responsible for leading the analysis of water take data, and providing sound, strategic advice to executive and governments on water use, trends and water accounting policy
  • Provide advice on technical aspects of the assessment of state prepared water resource plans
  • Collaborate with and influence and engage with other agencies of the Australian Government and the Basin States and Territories and at times external stakeholders, including chairing and providing leadership to official inter-government committees.
