Job description

About the role

Take this opportunity to harness your technical mindset and work with some of the most advanced electronics and equipment Australia’s got to offer.

What you’ll do:

As an Electronic Systems Technician you will apply your skills in the workshop, out in the field on domestic exercises, deployments and humanitarian operations. Electronic Systems Technicians serve in the Corps of the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RAEME).

You will diagnose, maintain, repair and inspect the Army's high-tech electronic, weapon fire control systems, sighting and surveillance equipment. You will receive comprehensive training throughout your career to master a huge variety of equipment.

You'll have the opportunity to grow your technical knowledge through a range of specialist courses covering equipment that includes: communications systems, armoured vehicles, anti-aircraft weapons, RADAR, bio-medical equipment and more.

The Army has some of the most advanced electronics and equipment in Australia, and as an Electronic Systems Technician you will inspect, diagnose and repair these assets. Get up close and personal with radar systems, advanced medical equipment, electronic surveillance devices and a whole range more.

In this role, you could find yourself working with a tight-knit team in the workshop, trouble-shooting a device in the field on exercise, or even deployed overseas to work on military systems during crucial moments. It’s a highly dynamic role with plenty of variety.

As an Electronic Systems Technician you’ll be involved with:

  • diagnosing, maintaining and repairing the Army's high-tech electronic, weapon fire control systems, sighting and surveillance equipment.
  • working with specialist teams.
  • performing safety and technical inspections on communications systems, armoured vehicles, anti-aircraft weapons, bio-medical equipment and more.
  • general soldiering duties, such as manning defensive positions, patrolling, traffic control, camouflaging of vehicles and field equipment, and navigation.

Training and Progression

You don’t need prior experience as a technician to join. An interest in electronics and instruments is all you need - you’ll learn everything else you need to know through your Initial Employment Training (IET). Upon completion, your first posting will likely be to one of the large Combat Service Support Battalions (CSSB) located in Brisbane, Darwin and Townsville.

You will receive ongoing training throughout your career to master a huge variety of equipment. Grow your knowledge and work across exclusive military vehicle systems, such as those used in the Abrams Tank and ASLAV (Australian Light Armoured Vehicle). You could also work with control systems, bio-medical equipment, anti-aircraft weapons and more.

Very few jobs offer the opportunity to get hands on with the state-of-the-art military technology, all while exploring Australia and beyond. Not to mention evolving and growing your career while doing so. It’s a one of kind role that you can only experience in the Army.
